Non Dependant Deductions was created by killbot99
Hi

My two sons currently live with me and I pay an increased amount of council tax because of this known as non dependant deductions. Both my sons have changed jobs recently and I reported this to both the council and DWP and I have now received a letter from my council asking me to supply details of their income.

Whilst trying to find out how much more I could be liable for I have come across several websites that state that

"When are deductions not taken for non dependants?

We do not take deductions if you (the claimant) or your partner:
are registered blind
receive DLA (care component)
receive attendance allowance"

I receive DLA care as well as mobility, can anyone explain what this actually means as I am not finding it very clear. My council's website does not have anything on this but I have seen it on the GOV.UK website and others. Thanks.

MCW

We do not deal with Housing Benefit in the forum, I would suggest you contact your council about the situation and see what they say.

I'm afraid we still do not deal with this.

Hi

I posted about this matter a few months ago and now I have had clarification from the council I thought it might help other members who are in the same boat as me.

If you or a partner receive DLA care (any level) and have people (usually adult children or other relatives) living with you who are in work or claiming benefits and you a receive council tax reduction then your council should not also charge your adult children/relatives a non dependant deduction.

It is definitely worth claiming. My adult sons both live at home, both work full time and I was being charged for them as well as for my husband and I, I receive ESA. However I informed the council I receive DLA care component and they have now stopped charging me for my sons. The more your children/relatives earn the greater the amount the council expects you to pay towards your council tax.

I still have to pay a certain amount of council tax as all working age claimants now do but it is less than it would have been before. I hope this might help anyone else who is in the same situation.

Additionally anyone or their partner who is blind or receives attendance allowance would also be exempt from NDP. This is a nationwide policy, it is not confined to individual councils incidentally.
