Please note:  this PIP test is for the proposed new PIP scoring system -it is not the test that is currently used to decide eligibility for PIP.  You can take the current PIP test here.

What is the proposed change

Under the proposed new test the mobility component remains the same. However, for the daily living component, whilst you must still score:

  • 8 points for standard rate
  • 12 points for enhanced rate

at least one of the descriptors you select must score 4 points or more.

So, if you select 4 descriptors scoring two points each, that will be 8 points but it will not qualify for an award.

But if you select one descriptor scoring 4 points and two descriptors scoring 2 points, that will be 8 points and you will qualify for an award.

The changes, if they ever happen, will not apply before November 2026.

Please note this a new form we have created - let us know if you spot any errors or have any problems with using it.

Lots of comments on here about pensioners and PIP. I get PIP and am over pension age; I was awarded again on review a few years before I ‘retired’ but hadn’t worked for some years. It is an indefinite award and, I presume, subject to a light touch review after ten years, which will be in 2029. I am frankly terrified. I get high rate care, mainly 3’s for the descriptors, no 4’s. Low rate mobility. Obviously can’t work to join the throngs of ‘better off in work’ (sarcasm) people that Reeves is jollying us along with (lying). So how will my needs be taken care of as I can’t improve my lot by working? And so many disabled people, retired or not, won’t be able to either.

I currently score 12 for mobility but only 2 for daily living.  Will my pip get affected.  I only get paid for the mobility part

What about those of us on contribution based ESÀ (In the Support Group), I also get higher rate of both PIP Elements.
Do any of these changes affect me?
    Help!

@Ralph Brunjes Old style are due to stay the same as they’d stopped switching people in 2021 but theyre saying they will now continue switching to uc until the 2028. For new style it will now be named something else and only short term.

@Lenny I have read that those of us on contribution based ESA (in the support  group), with higher rate of both pip elements , will NOT be put on UC but stay on what we are on .

This seems to be very narrow. I can walk but not with no pain or without getting very breathless. I often have to not do things because I am fatigued from heart medication. Where do I stand

I am too frightened to look at this. At least we have a year or so. I am autistic and mentally ill and this is hell, just hell.

As I have just had my review completed at the end of Feb I found this useful As I can compare my results Which were broadly similar With only four marks difference At the moment I have one descriptor with four points on my actual review for daily living  While My test just taken I think it should be two descriptors But that s not my decision to make With any luck That decision will not need be made for a while I hope that having an ongoing claim might help fingers crossed But who knows

So if you score more than 8 overall but not 4 in one descriptor you won’t be entitled to the daily living component at all? Sounds like a set up. I currently score 17 in daily living and do score 4 in one descriptor. Whether I get that next time around is anyones guess.

How does this affect DLA if not moved over to PIP yet?

The problem with this form is that we would score ourselves completely differently than what they score us as because they change what we say.

@Mike If you received pip before state pension age therefore still get it after retirement,  then yes as it stands at the moment it will apply yes

People will just claim incapacity benefits instead.
    • Thank you for your comment. Comments are moderated before being published.

@Jon What incapacity benefits? There aren't any. If I lose my pip all I can claim is the basic universal credit so I will be forced into a job I can't do (no experience, qualifications or skills) for minimum wage because I'll lose any protection I may have had. I'll be very lucky to find someone willing to employ me and will be happy to work around my health issues and disabilities, someone who can provide constant supervision and support, is willing to get cover for me with an hour's notice, someone who won't mind me taking more days off than working. It also would have to be a job on my doorstep because I can't use public transport.
Nothing will replace pip except poverty.

I'm sorry, how is that even right or fair? So as it stands we are classed as disabled now , but come November onwards next year the goalposts for eligibility will be moved and we will not be ?
It's effing outrageous, this seems to target people like me with mental health issues

@Marion You will be reassessed and if you don't score sufficient points your pip will be stopped.

Recently I went to court because they refused me twice , I refused to give up, so I appy to the courts and recieve the standard rate, I understand from the solicitor that they have been holding back alot of payments that many are entitled too, I'm glad I didn't accept there refusals,  never give up, that's what most of tgem are hoping ing for...

Hello.....how will this effect pensioners getting PIP....as presumably they would be entitled to Attendance Allowance if they  cant score 4 points in a descriptor....assuming they score 2 points for 4 descriptors.
And if a pensioner gets standard PIP and higher Mobility......but not 4 points for a single descriptor.....Will they be able to claim AA and keep their higher Mobility PIP?

@J If you have a PIP award that is awarded beyond your pension age you still get PIP.You cannot claim Attendance allowance as well.

@Ian My understanding is if  you’re claiming PIP before retirement age you continue on that following retirement but you can’t claim PIP and Attendance Allowance.

@Liz But will these pensioners who are already in receipt of PIP, be reassessed at some point and possibly lose it?
    • Thank you for your comment. Comments are moderated before being published.

@J Not of they got PIP before retirement age, they carry on getting it.
    • Thank you for your comment. Comments are moderated before being published.

@J If a pensioner applies for support after retirement age they get Attendance Allowance, however if they were on PIP before they retired then the PIP carries over into retirement. So a pensioner can get one or the other depending on when they apply.
