Hi I've tried to find a similar q & a on the forum topics but could not. I am on DLA high rate mobility & middle care component plus ESA support group. I was given an indefinite DLA award nearly 4 years ago. Now there is PIP & I am having sleepless nights, panic attacks & almost constant worry as I wait to be invited to apply for PIP. It could be anytime between now & 2 years time before this invitation lands on my doorstep. I had to cease working even after winning a Disability Discrimination tribunal & like so many others I feel useless & so so worried by the new rulings re welfare benefits. I have rheumatoid arthritis & depression plus anxiety issues. Is there any way that the Govwenment could actually tell claimants when their Postcode will be invited to claim PIP. There is a saying that Knowledge is Power....in the case of the lack of knowledge & waiting game being forced onto people like me this Government is abusing vulnerable people. My lease on a motability car is due to end in December 2015 & because I am faced with not knowing when I will be invited to claim PIP I am not going to lease a new car. It is my son who drives the car for me on most occasions. If I have to drive myself anywhere local I am exhausted for the next 2 or 3 days. No motability car will mean I will be more or less housebound. I realise I am luckier than so many people in this World but this waiting game is emotionally & physically draining. Are there others who feel like me? Any advice will be gratefully received.

The good news is that you are not alone in this situation, however, the bad news is that I do not think you will be able to pre-empt when you will be invited to claim PIP!

The DWP ran trials in two postcodes in July and September for the transfer of claimants with indefinite awards, but they now seem to have started a national roll out, with claimants being chosen at random.

All we suggest is that you are as prepared as possible for when you receive an invitation to claim PIP, by being as familiar as you can be with the criteria against which you will be assessed, these are quite different from those that resulted in your current DLA award.

Have a look at our PIP Claim guide for further information.

a family member discovered that PIP will bring her autistic son, more money than the DLA he presently gets. so she called DWP to say can i apply on his behalf for the switch to PIP, but they said no you have to wait until you're invited.

she wasn't happy about that, so asked to speak to a more senior person, & that person said, yes of course, all you have to do is make a completely fresh claim & he'll be considered for pip.

but my suspicions when the family told me this, were that they were just likely fobbing her off & trying to get her off the phone...so we're waiting to see

It was the case that you could only elect to claim PIP if you had an existing DLA award if you were in an active postcode, but as of July this is no longer the case as all postcodes are active.

It should just be a case of making a new claim for PIP, but they need to be aware that the intention of PIP is to reduce the disability budget by 20% so many DLA claimants will receive reduced or even no award at all. Once a DLA claimant makes a claim for PIP then they are committed to the process and cannot retain their existing DLA award.
