NI Class 1 Credits was created by Stephen Gothard
This question is on behalf of my Sister who has Parkinsons.
She applied for contributions based ESA and was told she did not have sufficient NI Class 1 contributions for the relevant years, due to the fact that she was ill, although not diagnosed. She made voluntary top up, as advised, but these didn't qualify as they were Class 3. I have tried all the usual call centres to find an answer but they have passed me round in a big circle.
How can my sister get Class 1 credits to top up 2011-12 and 2012-13?

For a claim made now, the Tax Years that will be used are 2012-13 and 2013-14.

Class 1 NI Contributions can only be acquired through paid employment.

Is your sister eligible for Income Related ESA? ESA(IR) is dependant on her household income, her savings and assets, and any hours that a partner works. See

Asset rule for ESA(IR)

24 hour work rule for ESA(IR)

The initial claim was made last year which is why the stated years were used. She is not eligible for ESA(IR) as her assets are too high.

CA online claim that late payment of class 1 contributions can be made. I have not yet seen any confirmation of this, or how to do it.

I'm not aware of any way to do this, Class 1 Contributions are based on your income in any particular week, she can try contacting HMRC as they are the organisation that manage this.

She will need to check her situation for the Tax Years I mentioned above as well, as she may not be able to back date her claim to last year any more, the usual period is three months.
