Backdated PIP was created by Gandalf
It is possible to apply for PIP to be backdated ? I have had mobility problems since the 1990's and only recently they discovered it was due to severe osteoarthritis in the hip . They know it has been there a very long time due to how it has tried to repair itself . I am on the waiting list for a total hip replacement . In 2007 I applied for DLA because I were bed/house bound as I still am today , but at that time the stated cause of the disability were put down as DVT and not seen as sufficient a condition to warrant a DLA payment .

I have not actually got PIP yet either , but I have the date for an assessment at home . But this time I have all the medical evidence needed that it is severe osteoarthritis , and have a blue badge, getting carers in, so it's likely I should get PIP this time around.

Should I mention anything about this mis diagnosis at this stage to the doctor that comes o see me , or wait until the pip is awarded, if it is , to make some kind of application for a back date . Is it the same as a "supersession" application ?

Many Thanks.

I am afraid there is no way to backdate a claim for PIP, an award will at best, only apply from the date you made it.

It is important you understand that an award will not be made because you have Osteoarthritis, but rather the care and mobility issues that result from that condition.

I hope that you were able to make good use of our PIP Claim guides, which contain a section covering the assessment and the questions you are likely to be asked.

Was it the same as that in 2007 thou ? I have all the paperwork from back then and it seemed to be very dependent on the misdiagnosis of DVT and not any resulting conditions. Some medical authority back then deemed I needed a home assessment so there some acknowledgement of mobility issues but because it were called DVT and not arthritis the claim was rejected . There was no daily activity points system being used . I would have scored enough points with that system.

I shouldn't have called it a PIP backdate really , it was another benefit back then. And different ways they judged if you were eligible for it or not.

The issue is not whether you would have qualified for PIP or not, it would have been DLA in 2007, but whether you made a claim, which you did not. Benefits cannot be claimed retrospectively, however well the claimant might meet the criteria, unless such backdating it is defined in the legislation, even then the normal period is no more than three months.

Neither PIP nor DLA has any form of backdating included.

I did make claim in 2007. I thought I might have a case under a supersession application in that the DWP were not making the decision with the correct information , only the misdiagnosis they were given at the time.
