should i ring ATOS/DWP was created by Cemily
Hi I was transferred from IB to ESA (CB SG) without f2f, in Jan 2013.

In Dec 13 (2months before they said I would be reassessed), I received a new ESA50, which I returned mid Jan this yr. Ive heard nothing from them yet other than the regular benefit increase letters they send out in april.

I'm aware that 7mnths is 'nothing' in terms of the wait, & am happy to continue with the 'no news is good news' attitude almost indefinitely because I have mental as well as physical health problems, and just thinking about even someone else contacting them on my behalf makes me distressed.

I really really REALLY just want to keep my head down & not alert them to my presence, that's not altoghether rational I know, but not lifting my head above the parapet helps me feel less scared.

However.... what also worries me is whether by not asking them how things are progressing something bad could happen,- what if a letter asking me for a f2f doesn't arrive & I miss it? And, oh I don't know anything else that could be going on that I don't know about.

I realise no one can say for certain, but in your experience is just ignoring it all until I hear something from them, a 'safe' strategy.

I'm not sure there is an answer to this.

You have no specific responsibility to chase ATOS for an assessment and there are still considerable delays in the system, we are still regularly hearing of claimants waiting 12 months to hear from ATOS.

Conversely, if a letter goes missing you obviously won't know about it, perhaps a good starting point is to consider how good your current mail delivery is and whether other post has disappeared or taken a long time to arrive.

It's a Catch-22 which I suspect only you can resolve :)

thanks Gordon.

The ESA50 took 5 days to arrive & I've not had many letters go astray in the 20yrs I've lived here. So assuming that they have to give you 7days notice for a f2f (is that correct or have I picked that up wrongly from somewhere?) then all things considered I think I'll leave it a bit longer.

As you say it's a catch22 but as long as it's not known to be a really bad idea to just wait & see then that's reassuring.

thank God for B&W.
3 cheers for the mods!! :)

They are required to give you 7 days written notice of an appointment unless you accept an early one, however, the 7 days includes postage so in practice most claimants only receive 5 days notice.

If you do contact ATOS then you will be talking to their administrative staff, who will be looking at the status of your claim on their computer system, they can tell you;

- if your file has even been looked at yet
- has a decision been made on a face to face
- that an appointment letter has been issued or that your file has been returned to the DWP

Thanks so much Gordon, it's easy to forget that the people answering the phone are merely looking at a screen rather than involved with your case in some way. I am psyching myself up to ask my support worker to ring them.

Don't forget that you will still need to be present to answer all of the security questions and to give them authority to talk to your support worker.
