Nickname: Allyfin1
Age: 52
Main health condition: Both physical and mental health
Main conditions that affect daily living: Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis of the lower lumbar, chronic anxiety and depression, Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, sleep apnea
Rate of PIP daily living component: Enhanced
4 point descriptor score: No
Possibility to score at least one 4-point daily living descriptor at the next review: Not likely at all because I mainly scored 2’s
Tasks you struggle with on a day-to-day basis: Due to having 3 different energy limiting conditions and all over body pan I struggle every day. I wake unrefreshed and therefore just getting out of bed and taking care of myself and my daily tasks is a daily struggle. I experience pain throughout the night and day at variable levels, my walking is affected, my hands, feet, hips, back are all painful when I sit, stand, walk or lie down, it is fluctuating but can be constant.
My long-term partner ended our relationship and made me homeless, I am now in social housing but am completely alone. I have no social, family or professional support so have no choice but to do everything myself. This is an extreme struggle both physically and mentally, it’s exhausting and emotionally draining, but I have no other choice.
Expected income you will lose if the Green Paper cuts are imposed: I completely rely on contributions based ESA support group benefit and PIP for all my rent and bills. It only covers that, I don’t have enough left to pay for treatments I need, or for transport anywhere, so I am socially isolated, don’t have money for any clothes, to get my hair cut or anything that would be classed as a “luxury”.
The cuts to PIP scoring would see me lose out on the daily living component which would amount to around £5720 per year loss of income (around 10 months rent). Without this I will be plunged into poverty and debt as I will not be able to pay my rent and bills. It will make my conditions worse as stress exacerbates them both physically and mentally, making it even more impossible for me to work than it is now. How will this help me?
Expected problems if you tried moving into work, with support from a work coach: I haven’t been able to work for 10 years, pressure to look for work will exacerbate my conditions as stress causes flare-ups beyond my control. I also self-harm when put under pressure or extreme stress as I cannot cope with changes in routine, with having to attend regular appointments, with deadlines or commitment due to my chronic mental health conditions. I have social anxiety and struggle going anywhere let alone somewhere new, I have panic attacks and struggle meeting anyone new, I won’t cope with the pressure and expectations put on me.
Anything else to tell us: The current PIP system isn’t inclusive of fluctuating, invisible, energy limiting conditions and mental heath limitations, let alone the proposed new points criteria. The DWP and government doesn’t understand this concept or that by trying to force already chronically ill people into working by taking away their social security, isn’t going to magically make them well. It is not simply a “mind over matter” problem, with all the best will and desire in the world I cannot make my body less exhausted, fatigued and painful.
