Nickname: sick&tired
Age: 61
Main health condition: Physical health
Main conditions that affect daily living: Autoimmune disease, osteoarthritis, hearing impairment
Rate of PIP daily living component: Standard
4 point descriptor score: No
Possibility to score at least one 4-point daily living descriptor at the next review: Unlikely, depending on how the word prompting is interpreted. I use my phone & lists to keep on top of daily living tasks
Tasks you struggle with on a day-to-day basis: Having a shower, getting dressed, preparing food, shopping, going out, talking with other people, keeping on top of my medication regime, opening food containers, any sustained activity, using a screen (I have eye involvement), avoiding infection (I’m immunosuppressed). I manage to do things by keeping as mobile as I can, being organised, planning very carefully and resting frequently. My autoimmune disease and the treatment for it makes me fatigued and there is no prospect of a cure, but without the treatment and frequent hospital monitoring I would die. My osteoarthritis continues to progress and there is no treatment for it, so I am continually facing new challenges in my everyday life. Any task can be a challenge in this uncertain situation, but many are not permanently impossible.
Expected income you will lose if the Green Paper cuts are imposed: I expect to lose my daily living PIP. I’m hoping the timing will work so that I live long enough to claim my state pension before my next review. I’ll be better off once I get my pension. I had to retire early as I had so much time off sick for treatment and my prognosis is poor. It Is difficult to predict prognosis accurately with a rare autoimmune disease. I was able to claim my occupational pensions but they do not cover my daily living costs. I’m currently trying to save as much of my PIP as possible to fund an adapted kitchen as I’ve been told by I’m not eligible for a disabled facilities grant. I would also like to fund a walk in shower, stairlift and adjustable bed, but it depends how much of my PIP I can save, with so many other rising costs.
Expected problems if you tried moving into work, with support from a work coach: My old employer would have me back if there was any question I was well enough to work and they could spare the cash. I do unpaid work for them when I can - they don’t have the flexibility to pay me occasional sessional fees like they used to, because of their own budgetary constraints. Recently I did two half day sessions, after 6 months off, because I was too unwell.. I do some ongoing mentoring work for them when I can. A work coach would be quite irrelevant to my situation.
Anything else to tell us: I don’t understand why benefit recipients are being targeted. I have the lowest income of most of my family members. They have said they’d rather pay more tax than see my income cut. But we all feel it would be much better for the government to target tax evasion and tax avoidance and make the fraudsters pay. There are many more of them than benefit fraudsters. My family members are trying to get on the housing ladder, save for their own retirements and even think about starting a family of their own. They work very hard and it’s difficult to understand why some people are so well off and so many others have so little. I thought a Labour government would be addressing inequality, not making things worse.
