Nickname: NursePractitioner
Age: 50’s
Main health condition: Physical health
Main conditions that affect daily living: Myotonic Dystrophy
Rate of PIP daily living component: Enhanced
4 point descriptor score: No
Possibility to score at least one 4-point daily living descriptor at the next review: I’ve just been reassessed and scored 2 for every descriptor. I’ve been on DLA then PIP for 18 years and have never got more than 3 for any.Under the current system and under new proposals I doubt I would get 4 in anything.
Tasks you struggle with on a day-to-day basis: Mainly cognitive things that require focus, attention and memory. Struggle to follow along with anything on tv or read a book, can’t count money. Have reminders for everything. Extreme fatigue, in bed for 5/6 every night. Don’t socialise as can’t follow along with a conversation. Struggle to find words or forget what I’m saying mid sentence.
Extreme apathy and lack of motivation which are symptoms of myotonic dystrophy
Can leave pans cooking on the stove and go off and do something else so I have to slow down and take my time with everything. That is extremely exhausting in itself. There are lots of things I struggle with that all add up. Too many to mention here!
Expected income you will lose if the Green Paper cuts are imposed: I don’t know the exact amount but if I lost pip, I would loose the limited capacity for work related activity element. Also i mighty loose the transitional payment protection I got when I was moved from housing benefit to universal credit.
I don’t think anyone is 100% sure what they will loose as it seems that the government aren’t 100% sure what they have decided yet. I could potentially be left with nothing but my NHS pesnsion which wouldn’t even cover my rent.
Expected problems if you tried moving into work, with support from a work coach: I do not have a fully functioning cognitive ability therefore I cannot see any kind of work I could do. It’s take an huge amount of effort and systems I have in place to get through the day and keep myself relatively safe, and with support from friends and family. I would have to be honest about that if I ever had an interview. Also I haven’t worked since 2007. Who would want to take me on? I can’t even remember my work history enough to put a CV together.
Anything else to tell us: I worked all my adult life for the NHS as a nurse and I miss working dearly. If I thought for a second that I could work in any capacity, I would. The government needs to at the very least, protect people who get enhanced rate of PIP. Despite only scoring 2 points for all descriptors, that DOES NOT mean that I am for work in any capacity. Peoples individual cases should also be taken into serious consideration and individual risk assessments completed.
