The DWP has developed an “automated Digital solution” which extends PIP awards repeatedly when they are close to ending if a review has still not been completed, a government minister has revealed this week.

Chloe Smith, minister for disabled people, disclosed the existence of the automated system in response to a parliamentary question about how many PIP claims are extended more than once.

Although Smith said that the figures for the number of claimants whose awards have been repeatedly extended was not available, she did admit that it was happening.

She told MPs:

“To protect PIP customers, we have developed an automated Digital solution which essentially extends the current award for cases where there is a risk that the claim will fall out of payment.

 “As we see continuing high demand for PIP new claims, customers are currently waiting longer than expected to have their claim reviewed, which has led to some awards being extended more than once.”

    Mine was extended until 2023 August but do not know when the DWP would contact me for the renewal. I do not know when should I contact them for the review. Thanks.

    My PIP award ends in June 2022. I received my review form in September and returned it in November. By January I hadn’t heard anything so I contacted them and they said it was still waiting to be looked at by a decision maker. I haven’t heard anything about my award being extended and I’ve been so anxious about my award ending and losing payments that I asked my MP’s office to chase it up, and I’m currently waiting to hear from back from them. If it has been extended beyond June, I haven’t been informed. PIP accounts for more than half of my entire income (ESA is the smaller half), so it’s a huge concern and source of stress.

    I was awarded enhanced for both care and mobility for 10 years back in 2018. I received a letter back in 2020 to say it was being increased by 1 year to 2029.

    Review form sent in August 2021, text message received 28th April 2022 to say my PIP will continue to be paid until they review it.

      @Katie Oh dear they're behind by a lot then. No wonder they didn't care when I called to get more time a couple of times. Mine is due to lapse in August 2022, I got the form around last September but didn't get it in until December (after extensions). Likely going to be a long time until I hear anything then.

    Mine was extended last year. From 2023 to 2024. They informed me by letter. I assumed it was down to the covid backlog.

    My award was due to finish in July, but late last year was extended until 29 December 2022. I was informed of this by letter from the DWP. My Blue Badge was due to expire in July when the PIP ended. But when I contacted the DWP by phone - ringing on a Tuesday morning about 9.10am - I was answered by a very helpful lady. She offered to send a copy of the original award letter plus one showing the extension. I passed these to my local authority via the Government application for renewal, and the badge arrived within three days.

    My renewal had to be in by beginning of dec 2021 .

    Myself and my wife have had our PIP extended. My wife's was due to run out last week in April. We had heard nothing except for a letter from my carers allowance saying that was about to end. We contacted PIP to be told my wife's PIP was extended to July a couple of days later we received a text message saying they acknowledge receipt of our "review form" (from june 2021) that we didn't need to phone for an update again, they would contact us with a decision.

    My husband has had his review in since July 21 and it has been extended. We have had no communication from DWP PIP but Carers contacted myself telling me my CA is stopping, several calls later I got to the bottom of the situation. I am closely watching payments, letters news etc

    My award finishes August 2022 sent form back for renewal in February 2022 but not heard back am worried I'm going to lose my pipit on enhanced daily living and standard mobility

    Fingers crossed this will happen to me as my 5 year award is due to expire in August, and I've not yet been sent the dreaded brown envelope for reassessment. No news from DWP though and I'm scared to ask...

    I have now had my own PIP extended twice and my wife has also had it extended, which means both of us have had to pay the short term payment of £10.00 each per period which in my case is just a year. However what is interesting to me is that since my last PIP assessment was due ( I completed the forms etc and sent them off) I have now retired, so I have no idea what will be happening to my latest assessment which had an increased disability on it. If it will be increased or if I will be called for a FTF . I await their decision if and when they get around to it. They have immediately stopped EESA , Carers for myself. Very quick to stop things but very slow to award.

    Can B&W lobby Chloe Smith and other relevant government officials for disability premiums to be paid to those in receipt of contribution based ESA and in the support group please?

      @Davinder Hear hear!  I am so frustrated that, yet again, those of us on contributions-based ESA (Support group) miss out on payments 'made to those on benefits'.  Happened to us last year; happening to us again now.  

      Does anyone have any idea how many people on contributions-based ESA actually have any additional income?  Would be interested to know.  I was told by CAB last year (when they did a benefits assessment for me) that I would be significantly better off on UC, but having had to claim social 'security' (hah!) on and off over the years I have absolutely no faith in the system to make a fair assessment of any future claim.  Am absolutely bricking it at the thought of transferring over to UC.  (Somebody somewhere said there would be no assessment for claimants transferring over - but given we have to respond when the DWP UC-transfer letter comes through, I assume we are asked to provide information?  If so, surely this is assessed?

    Please B&W could you approach Ms Smith on behalf of all of us, to ask that the software be made to automatically generate a proper written update every time? This would be so much better for Blue Badge problems and most importantly Claimants' mental health.

    I haven't received any confirmation in any form whatsoever, that my PIP has or is being automatically extended by this supposing new digital software, that Chloe Smith is raving on about !!!!!.  My PIP review was due 8 months ago.  I have rang them up over 7 months ago, and told me that they have received all my forms, evidence the whole shooting match.  But still not a peep form them.

    Has anyone else had any confirmation as in regards to what chloe smith has said?

    ie a letter from DWP stating the fact.  As i would only expect it to be sent out in writing to officialise it, that's it's actually happening, and payments are still being paid.
