UC and dependants at University was created by Grandma1967
Hi. I am on UC and not working. My child will turn 18 and go to Uni locally still living at home (not dependant due to disability) I understand all UC that I receive for him will stop. What I can’t find out is if he applies for student loan will this affect my remaining allowance. I keep finding conflicting articles saying once 18 and at uni you are no longer a dependant but then articles saying student maintenance is classed as income for my claim? If this is true then you lose the child element and then have to support them from your own allowance?

Hi Grandma1967

Your child will no longer be a Qualifying Young Person when he starts the course leading to a university degree level qualification. So as you say you will lose the UC child element. He will then be classed as a non-dependant. As such his income will not affect your UC. You may be exempt from the UC Housing Cost contribution on the disability criteria.
Once 18 he becomes an adult for Council Tax purposes and if you are in a Council Tax Reduction scheme then it will need to be recalculated.
