what does New Style ESA Review entail? was created by KB
I was migrated to Universal Credit from Income Related ESA earlier this year, and during the process I was switched to New Style ESA and Universal Credit. I was in the Support Group for IR ESA, and have No Work Related Requirements under UC.
My ESA review still seems to be due in March 2026, but I haven't actually ever been through an ESA Review before and am wondering what happens.
1. Do I need to fill in a Capability for Work Questionnaire (ESA50)?
2. Do I need to provide evidence, as in Dr's letters, etc.
2. Will I need to go through an assessment, and if so how will this occur (I am Housebound so can't get to an assessment centre).
3. Now that I am on New Style ESA will I need bank statements, and if so, for how many months? I know I had to provide them for IR ESA but as New Style ESA is not means tested I am unsure if I'll still need to provide statements, and this is further complicated by the fact that I am on UC which is means tested. I've tried Googling but can't find the answer to this.
Thanks in advance for anything that can shed any light on the process.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi KB
You say "My ESA review still seems to be due in March 2026" but this is very likely not going to be the case owing to the large backlogs of reviews.
There is no point in phoning the DWP about this as all the agent can do is look at the Prognosis Date on Opstrat which tells them nothing about the effect of the backlogs.
Apart from that all UC claimants will now have a yearly review which is nothing to do with the health assessment.
Hope this helps

I spoke to an agent on the ESA phone line a couple of months ago and he said the review would be going ahead and the form would come out in January (I failed to ask him anything about the form or what the review would entail and am trying to avoid phoning the ESA phone line again with waits of an hour or more on hold).
I know nothing about a backlog of reviews, can you tell me anything you know about that, or where you heard there was a backlog/where I can read about that, that sort of thing?
I also didn't know that all UC Claimants are to have a yearly review, when I Google it, Google AI just says that a UC review can happen at any time, and I can't see anything (from a quick search) that says that UC Claimants are to have a yearly review.
Again, is there anywhere you know of where I can find out about that?
Not doubting your information btw, just want to find out more about what you are saying so that I can be informed.
