PIP claim - Autism and/or Anxiety was created by Chill-E
Hi

I'll shortly be applying for PIP. I was diagnosed with Autism at the start of the year and now realise many of my health issues over the past decades were related to anxiety, which was a revelation I learnt from Therapy which followed.

I'm now starting NHS therapy for Social Anxiety, which I believe is just integral of my Autism. But I don't know if PIP assessors would see it that way or as two separate things ?

My question is (finally) should my PIP application just focus on Autism and consider the social anxiety is integral to that, or do you think I should I call out in my answers to each when my difficulties are predominantly one and not the other, or is it OK to say, when it could be a mix of the two.

I appreciate your help as it will make it easier for me to complete the PIP form

Thank You !

Hi Chill-E,
I think it is important that you explain the totality of your disability. I suspect that the difficulties you face are not the product of just one health issue. Health problems often interact with each other - eg fatigue gets worse due pain, pain gives rise to more anxiety which increases fatigue etc
Unless you can say with certainty that you struggle with a specific PIP activity solely due to one health problem, there is no need to try and 'allocate' a particular health condition to your disabilities. There are two ways -
You can just say eg 'I need to have social support in order to engage with others because I have panic attacks...' or eg
' I have social anxiety and autism, this means I can not engage with others. I get panic attacks and .....'
In the additional info space you can explain more about how autism and anxiety affect you and that each condition interacts if you wish.
The important thing is to fully explain the problems you have, the difficulties, give examples.
I hope this helps.
