Slightly better - inform the change? was created by Anxious Anonymous
Dear B&W

Had a discussion with psychiatrist and they feel over the past 12 months I’m slightly better which even for me is a surprise. I still struggle daily and they admit I need to take things slow and probably can’t work either.

So do I inform PIP that I am slightly better?

Or is it a minor change?

Hi Anxious Anonymous

Mental illnesses are much more subject to change than physical ones. Would you say you are generally getting better because of new medication or counselling/therapy ?
Is this feeling of improvement experienced all the time? Or just occasionally?
More importantly how does this improvement translate in your daily activities as far as the PIP descriptors are concerned? For instance can you now go out more often or go to more destinations or meet people socially where before you could not?
Do you still receive any care from a support worker or CPN?

They know I need support with anxiety to leave the house, so I am still not leaving the house alone / socialising etc and the psychiatrist knows this and knows this is a struggle.

He said only slightly better and less chaotic than last year, however symptoms remain and I remain under a psychiatrist and will be changing medications and due to see him again in 12 weeks.

I’m also getting a peer support worker (don’t really want one tbh) and having CAT therapy. So there’s scope for more treatment.

As I say, he also said I need to take things very slowly and doesn’t feel I can work right now, so that might tell you I guess.

I suppose my change might be considered

Extreme > Severe
or
Severe > Moderate

It’s really difficult to gauge.

Hi Anxious Anonymous

I obviously don't know you well enough to give you definitive advice apart from signposting you. In my experience peer support workers are a great help and maybe your one once he/she gets to know you can advise in the future about your prognosis and PIP.
" Slightly less chaotic " would not mean that great an improvement in my opinion.

Hope this helps.

Yes I’ve never had a peer support worker so not sure what they do.

Hi Anxious Anonymous

In Mental Health Services run by the NHS Peer Support Workers are support workers who have lived experience of a relevant mental health condition. For instance the NHS Somerset Early Intervention in Psychosis group employs Peer Support workers who were formerly patients and whose condition is now stable. They have valuable insights into the issues confronting patients with psychosis and meet with service users and their carers.
