Why did I get a p45 applying for UC when I am in the support group ?

I applied for UC on Sat 17th May so my ESA and rent benefit ended 30th May.

I just received a P45 dated 30th May 2025 which does not make sense to me as I was in the ESA support group and have been since the ESA support group started, because I am long term ill.

I notified my job coach in the UC application process I was in the ESA support group and should be automatically transferred as per B&W advice, using phrases in the UC guide. She acknowledged the note and stated...

The details of your ESA claim will be transferred to your UC claim as part of teh processing.

Should I be getting a p45 if I am being transferred from ESA support group to the UC 'no work related requirements' group?

Is this normal?

Can anyone help me understand if this is an error I should notify to my job coach in my UC application notes?

Hi boolybooly

I'm sorry, but your question is outside the remit of the forum.

I think you may have been issued a p45 because your ESA - came to an end. Your UC is a different benefit, even though other details have been transferred across. I could be wrong, so please don't take my word for it. Ask the question in your journal.

Hello boolybooly,

I have also just migrated from ESA support group to UC. I also received a P45. It's quite normal and nothing is wrong with your managed migration process. The DWP has to issue a P45 when any benefit ends, just as your ESA has. You will also receive an accompanying letter which gives the detail of how much ESA benefit you were paid from the beginning of 2025/26 tax year until the date your ESA claim ended on 30th May. You don't need to show it to an employer because you are not moving into employment, you are moving to UC. Just put it somewhere safe for your own reference and don't worry about it.

You should have LCWRA included in your first statement from the start of your claim since you are migrating from the ESA Support group. If it's not there, don't panic. They have a backlog transferring details across because of the sheer number of migrations. Put a note under 'payments' in your journal for your case manager to chase it.

Good luck with it all!
