Hi Perdita

The Going Out activity looks at three things.

Planning a route - this is primarily a cognitive or sensory (e.g. blindness) activity. They are being asked about the problems they would have with working out how to get from one place to another, they do not need to be able to follow the route that they are planning.

Undertaking a Journey - this is to do with mental health issues such as agoraphobia and social anxiety and is concerned with them leaving the house to go somewhere, they will be interested in the things that stops them doing this. You need to show that they would suffer "overwhelming psychological distress" to meet the criteria.

Following a route - This activity about the problems they would have navigating a route. So are there any problems; cognitive, sensory or mental health issues that would prevent them from doing this? This is different from undertaking a journey, in fact, if they cannot undertake a journey then they will not score points for following one and vice versa.

Hi Perdita

Has the person never undertaken an unfamiliar journey even with someone they know?

Not sure if our situation will be of any help but there is some relevance I think.

We had an opposite decision on my son's claim 5 years ago. I had filled out his pip form to say he needed help on unfamiliar journeys but that he could manage some limited familiar, practised routes alone.

He is autistic with a mild learning disability too. He was able to catch one specific bus alone, reliably and had been doing that well for about 3 years at the time i applied.

I put all that on the form and ticked the box to say he did NOT suffer OPD.

The assessor appears to have phoned his GP for more info. The GP does not know my son at all as he keeps physically well. However, he does have many reports going back years and the GP seems to have made the comment that my son struggles with activities of daily living and is unlikely to improve.

The assessor has then called up my son's support worker who confirmed he can use a bus himself but said that if the bus broke down he wouldn't know what to do and would shut down completely!

So - he got enhanced mobility. At the time it was awarded the bus had never broken down. So i didn't know how he'd cope but i didn't think enhanced mobility was right for him. However, i left it as was after getting the assessors report and seeing she'd ignored my comments and gone with his GP and support worker's opinion (paper based asst)

His renewal is due up this year and, quite recently, the bus broke down. He was a little anxious and texted me repeatedly but he coped fine. Now i am in the tricky position of wording his form in such a way that they remove enhanced mobility and put him on standard (he can't do unfamiliar journeys at all)

I know from past experience that reporting a slight improvement in one area has resulted in the loss of the full award.

My son doesn't do many journeys but he is trotting around his known routes very confidently now; little wonder after 10 years in the same routine!
