Applying for PIP was created by JackieO
Hello everyone,

I am 67 years old and over the years the arthritis and nodules in my fingers has become worse, with increasing pain and a reduction in my grip. Also, for a few years now I have been experiencing pain in my elbow and upper arm.

To try and stop any further deterioration, I have been going to the gym and lifting light weights to strengthen the joints.

Recently, I had a private ultrasound undertaken by a private physiotherapist, in order to see what is going on and the report states that there is evidence of degenerative changes, potentially associated with underlying pathology such as osteoarthritis, along with traction ostophytes and spurs on the elbow, alongside a few other irregularities.

My question is, the report mentions that I have been lifting at the gym, although what took me to the physio is ongoing RT arm pain for a few years. Will going to the gym be seen as a reason not to be able to apply for PIP, even though the sessions are carefully managed in order that I don't over exert myself?

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts and guidence. Jackie

Hi Jackie0

I'm afraid, as you are over the State Pension Age you are not eligible to apply for PIP for the first time. Your only other option is to consider applying for Attendance Allowance. www.gov.uk/attendance-allowance
