Council Tax Disregard was created by UC:
Good morning everyone.
I have recently moved to a new area and in the process of arranging our Council Tax payments.
My 37 year old daughter is autistic, a vulnerable adult and requires significant supervision.
My wife is her full time Carer and receives Carer’s Allowance for the full time care that she provides for our daughter.
My Council have been extremely helpful and advised that both my daughter and wife qualify for a ‘Disregard’ of Council Tax that equates to a 25% Council Tax reduction.
As part of this process, the Council asked if I provided any care for our daughter.
I replied that I am in receipt of enhanced component of Daily Living for PIP, which the Council representative advised would be disregarded if I was able to demonstrate that I also provided a level of care for my daughter for 35 hours per week.
My care relates to supervision and respite for my wife more than anything as my daughter requires significant care and cannot be left alone due to her complex needs.
My question is are the Council correct in their advice, as, yes, I do need to supervise my daughter for times when my wife needs a break, does the shopping etc and during the night when she often wakes up, but my gut feeling is that there may be a possible conflict here?
My Council are genuinely trying to help me, but I just want to be totally transparent, especially with DWP.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
