Assessor misrepresented information/facts was created by TranmereFan23
I had a F2F assessment at a Maximus centre in the North-west of England recently. The venue was not properly wheelchair accessible, despite me stating in the application I am a wheelchair user, so that was a good start. Obviously I was expecting something to be misrepresented or distorted from the meeting, but the PIP4 outcome shows some absolutely laughable and ridiculous distortions/lies, which can easily be refuted via the audio recording we made and the medical evidence provided, which the assessor has not referenced in their decision making. The assessor did not even seem to know about one of my principal causes of disability, which was clearly referenced in the original application, and tried to steer the conversation to another aspect of my problems (gynaecological), which although problematic, are not the biggest issue.

Apparently:
1) "Not anxious, agitated, restless or tense" - I was squirming in pain in my wheelchair throughout. I was wringing my hands throughout. I became evidently distressed several times and the assessor passed me a box of Amazon Basics tissues. She noted only that I was "briefly tearful once." The audio will say something different!

2) "Normal complexion, not sweating" - I was bright red in the face throughout, which I referred to verbally once, and also sweating from my forehead, face and nose. I used one of the tissues supplied by the assessor to wipe the sweat away at one point.

3) "Normal power and pinch grip" - this was NOT assessed. They asked me to put my thumb towards each finger, which I could do with difficulty, but the actual strength was not assessed at all. My medical records state empirically that I have reduced grip strength, measured by an actual physio using an actual device.

4) Activity 3 - the assessor scores 0. I explained in the assessment and the original application that I require assistance from my husband to perform the MSK physio exercises that have been prescribed, because I cannot independently move my left leg and am frequently in excessive pain. This has been roundly ignored.

4) Activity 5 - assessors ticked "needs to use an aid or appliance," which refers to a toilet frame, but in addition to this, I explained that I need assistance from my husband to use intermittent catheters. The assessor claims that because I can drive, this must mean I have sufficient dexterity to catheterise myself. Aside the fact that the level of dexterity required to insert a slimline catheter into your (female) urethra is WAY different to operating a car steering wheel, the assessor does not reference that I am unable to assume the position required to self-insert the catheter, due to degenerative disc and other spinal issues (the ones she conveniently did not seem to know about at the start of the assessment).

5) Activity 12 - the assessor ticked "can move 1 metre but no more than 20 metres, aided or unaided" - this is so laughable that it's really comedic. I explained that despite historically being able to mobilise short distances on crutches, after various surgeries on my left hand/wrist, injuries to my left shoulder and the consequences of being hospitalised for 3wks in late 2024, I can no longer stand or move on crutches. I use a wheelchair all of the time. I can only ever stand still, on the spot, on one leg (my right leg) for a matter of seconds before needing to sit back down. This was evident from the F2F meeting and also detailed in the discharge paperwork from my 2024 admission, which includes extensive OT and physio assessments. I know that the descriptor will give the same points outcome as "cannot stand or move", but the principle of the matter is what is bothering me.

The assessor did not write down the side effects of liquid morphine or codeine that I described verbally and in writing in the application and which are so widely known that it's common knowledge.
The assessor states I can't be in as much pain as I suggest because I am not taking the maximum doses of codeine/morphine every day, but I explained that this is due to it making me go to sleep and I have to just endure, push through and whilst explaining all this, I was crying and upset (will be audible on the recording).

Also, I was noted to "wheel myself into the assessment", except that's also complete BS. Due to the inaccessible nature of the building, which had a large step at the entrance, and which was on a slope and with a door on a strong spring that would not stay open, my husband had to use considerable effort to push me up a ramp that was far to steep to meet acceptable standards. A random member of the public was recruited to hold the door open because staff were so disinterested that they f****ed off as soon as they shoved the ramp down. The doorway into the assessment room was almost exactly the width of my standard, manual wheelchair and in a very tight spot, so my husband pushed me through into the room because there was no room for my hands on the pushrims. Obviously, the room was flat and hardwood, so easy to push on once inside.

I have contacted the DWP and lodged my objections clearly. A case manager has written it all down and says they will pass it to the decision makers.

I will be complaining to the service provider also.

It's just so laughable and ridiculous. Who in the heck does the woman think she is, having met me for 5mins and knowing nothing about me (having clearly not considered all the information in the original application), that she can contradict the opinion of consultant urogynaecologists, consultant pain team specialists, consultant spinal surgeons etc? Contradicting NHS physios, OTs and a social worker who have all assessed my needs, including around the intermittent catheterisation, and all come to the same conclusions? I supplied a 37 page social services care assessment, which concluded I had a range of care support needs. Councils do NOT issue care support packages lightly, so for a random assessor to decide very different things seems ludicrous.

I just wanted to get this rant out because I'm at home alone and no-one to shout to!! :S

Hi Tranmere,

You're unfortunately one of many who feel like this, and experience such negativity. It's understandable that you want to rant, and it seems like you're focused on doing whatever you can, to get the correct outcome.

Good luck with everything!

I'm sure there will be plenty claimants who will want to further elaborate on their own experiences of a similar nature.

Chris.
