Tried to ask for UC advance payment online, but encountered problems was created by VIA
Hello,
I went to my Universal Credit Online account to apply for an advance payment.
On various webs it says I can apply for a UC advance up to 100% of my first estimated payment.
Unfortunately my online accounts says I can borrow up to a figure which is half my first estimated payment of UC, as worked out by CAB Help to Claim.
The total Monthly UC I should get is double that amount and comprises all the benefits I get in a month prior to migration CTC, ESA, HB and Transitional Protection.
The UC page says that the amount I can borrow up to is based:
- on my circumstances
- and what they were able to verify about me ( which makes me think they may not have been able to check some benefits I get which is odd as it should be easier for them to check the amount of Child Tax Credit, Employment and Support Allowance and Housing Benefit I used to get)
This make me think that either they have not completed all the checks or they did and made a mistake and worked out I should only be getting half of what I used to get on CTC, ESA AND HB.
I cannot ask for an advance now as I will only get half of what I should technically be getting.
So I will have to call them and discuss this with them.
I am wondering if anyone has any input to share regarding their experience requesting and advance payment and whether it went well or not.
I really appreciate any help.
Many thanks.
Best wishes.

Hi VIA
The DWP recommends the following Benefits Calculators to preview the amount of the UC Advance. What result do they give ?
Calculators
For information on income-related benefits, contribution-based benefits, Universal Credit, tax credits, Council Tax Reduction and Carer’s Allowance use:
entitledto benefits calculator
Turn2us benefits calculator
Policy in Practice better off calculator
Are you also aware of the following condition ?
You can only apply for an advance online if you are within your first Universal Credit assessment period and you have had an interview at the jobcentre. If you have passed your first assessment period you will need to apply by calling the helpline.

Thank you David.
I tried to use turn to us but they ask me about how much pension I get when I put my date of birth and answered all questions correctly and am nowhere near pension age, so I cannot carry on the calculation.
However I will call turn2us as maybe they could help me over the phone.
I was reading up on advance. and it seemed like you mentioned that if you apply for an advance before your first universal credit payment you have to have an interview at the job centre which I cannot do.
So I am tempted to apply for an advance ( a loan ) after my first universal credit payment, unfortunately I have been given a Section 21 notice…bad timing, right in the middle of my migration to UC when I get no UC money for 5 weeks and I have to find a new place to move to.
The Citizens Advice Bureau gave me the monthly UC figure I am to get, inclusive of a transitional element so as to get the same amount as before I submitted my claim to UC, while on esa support group, child tax credit and housing benefit.
As the UC website will only let me borrow an advance of only half the amount of UC CAB Help to Claim recommends I get ( which makes sense as it is the same amount of benefits I got prior to my claim submission to UC) it is either due to the fact, I assume, UC has made a mistake and only intend to pay me half of what I should get…
Or maybe they have not been able to verify everything about me as they page says the amount I can borrow is based on what they were able to verify about me and based on my circumstances.
Thank you for all your information David.
I will keep you all updated.
Best wishes
