Hi katy64

Welcome to the forum.

You might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is; www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum.

If you are only receiving Contribution Based ESA then a lump sum will not affect your ESA but a regular payment will. If the pension is more then £85/week then there will be a £1/week deduction for every £2 in excess of the £85.

If you are receiving any Income Related ESA, either in part or in whole, then it will affect your ESA.

First, there is an assets and savings rule if you take a lump sum.

Secondly, any regular payments will be deducted £ for £ from any ESA(IR) that you receive.

If the ESA(IR) is fully eroded then you will lose access to passported benefits such as free prescriptions and dental care.

Thank you for your reply
As I understand it do I deduct £85 from my gross pension per week , then 1/2 of what's left is then deducted from the ESA
Or if my pension is approx £500.00 per month this wipes out ESA all together.
The DWP dont make it easy to understand !!

If your pension is £500/month then that works out as £115.38/week (£500 x 12 = £6000 / 52).

The disregard is £85/week leaving £30.38 (£115.38 - £85) and half that is £15.19 (£30.38 / 2) which is the weekly deduction from your ESA (CB).
