When to apply for ESA was created by Leofwen
Hi Mods
I may have asked this before; excuse me if I have but the morphine addles my brain!
I am due to finish work on the 30 th September due to ill health. I have applied for my NHS pension (deferred benefits as i dont currently work for NHS) and they have now asked for a report from my Specialist as they need more information on my medical condition, the GP has already completed a report in support. They are trying to establish " permanent" incapacity and use the balance of probabilities argument. In the meantime, the process has taken so long thus far and is now likely to take a lot more time. As I will have no income after the 30 th September other than my DLA, should I apply in advance for ESA or wait until I have actually finished work. I know I will go on to the assessment rate, but does this get paid pretty quickly?
As ever the waiting is interminable and makes these issues take on huge proportions, as well as exacerbate my pain. Very difficult to remin positive when facing financial issues and nothing moves quickly!
Any comments are much appreciated as always

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

You should be able to make a claim in advance of your stopping work, but I cannot find any clear guidance of how far in advance you can do this, your best bet in to contact the DWP.
You will need to have a Fit Note from your GP covering you from the date of your claim.
ESA Payments usually take 10 days to process, you may not be paid for the first three days, this is usual, there are circumstances where these "waiting" days can be excused but I am not sure that you meet the requirements.

I don't remember how far in advance I started my claim, but I know that it was in advance. Everything was then ready to go and payment came through quite quickly, as I recall.
