Self-Employment and Working Tax Credits: Query

I was interested to read Buckle’s reply to Simon:

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/forum?view=topic&catid=10&id=99006

Buckle writes that if found “Fit to Work” at his next ATOS assessment he will “go Self Employed, register for Working Tax Credits, and do nothing !!!”

Is this a possible way forward for people in the same predicament as Simon and Buckle and those placed in the WRAG but unable to contend physically and/or mentally with a mandatory work placement? I would love to work a few hours per week but could only do this from home in brief 10-15 minute “shifts” as and when my body permits. It would be a fantastic relief from DWP/ATOS if I could be self-employed and earn enough enough to scrape.

I am sorry Mari but you have me at a disadvantage, I have re-read Buckie's post 3 times, and he does not say this.

I hope Buckie will excuse me for quoting hi entire post:

"Good read Simon... I am in a similar predicament although not so far back. Oct 2011.

I could not walk up to the examination room without stopping twice and as the Doctor stood at the door just watching, I basically crawled into the room saying, I hope your not expecting me to do further exercises for a while... All he said was It was not that type of medical but more of an examination with questions.

I too received only 6 points and a nice letter saying I was fit for work again. I have appealed but still await a date ? I too will run over and not be entitled to benefits from Dec I think, so hope it's before then. If not, I'll go Self Employed, register for Working Tax Credits, and do nothing !!!

I won my DLA Appeal with flying colours so can't see how if I couldn't walk for that, I could walk for ESA ?

Keep your chin up, It's a hard slog but you'll get there..."

One thing to consider is that HMRC have stated their intention of stamping out the practice of registering for Working Tax Credits and declaring low, or zero, income. The intention is to assume that national minimal wage is earned for the number of working hours declared. I am unsure when this is due to be implemented but other fora are discussing it in depth!

Mari

Sorry, I genuinely read the post 3 times and did not see that sentence.

Self-Employment is always an option, whether it is viable or not is another matter, and if it is not you may have burnt your boats in regard to re-claiming ESA, so it is something that has to be considered very carefully before proceeding.
