Having read your reply and Gordon's, I'm thinking that the DWP have sent the wrong forms for my husband to complete. I'm going to make sure that I put down all his illnesses and incapacities as this Wegener's is a new diagnosis; and hopefully he will recover from it, but it is debilitating condition and also a life threatening one. At present it is only the chemo that is keeping him going. Perhaps they may relent and put him in the Support Group for 6 mths.

Many thanks to this wonderful site, that I found by accident. I am a retired Civil Servant that worked for DWP so I have a grounding of how the system works, but even I need a helping hand to digest all the major changes that keep on happening. Thanks to all of your who work tirelessly for Benefits and Works. :)

If this form has been sent in preference to an ESA50 then I believe this to be a mistake by the DWP and you should contact them immediately.

I would also recommend that you confirm this conversation and any previous ones in writing to the DWP.

HI Gordon

When the ESA50 was received, my husband was in hospital (he was close to death with pneumonia) so I 'phoned DWP to inform them of his condition and that he could not possibly complete the form. I have never completed or sent an ESA50. Then when he was discharged, 'phoned DWP again and the ESA50A turned up. Thought the ESA50A had been sent because he had been in hospital. I've nearly completed it, but now I've got the extension for the return of this form I'm hoping that the new guidelines will be available before I return it, just incase there anything new I need to know that may be added to the ESA50A. No doubt, when they received it, they will realise the error and send an ESA50

You need to contact the DWP to find out what benefit he is on and for how long and whether the absence of an ESA50 will cause any problems. I would recommend you ask to speak to a Customer Services manager, this will require a call back.

If he is still on IB then his not having completed an ESA50 may compromise his transfer to ESA.

If he is actually on ESA, and this could have happened without proper notification, then his being in hospital would have automatically qualified him for the WRAG, however, once he leaves hospital (if he has not already), then his WRAG status comes into question and with an ESA50 there could be problems.

Update for you. My husband is still receiveing IB. But, here goes, DWP have sent him the new version of the ESA50, the one where the last page is signed by the doctor to confirm the patient is receiving chemotherapy. I phoned DWP and asked for an extension to complete this form and was told that there are no extentions given and that I should just complete the page where it asked why the form is being sent in late. I was told that they would 'put something on the system to let the officer know that I had phoned'. Luckily, they are still continuing to pay him. As you advised, there is only mention of chemo for cancer on this form and no other illnesses, but I will let you know what group my husband ends up in. Bye :)

:) At last, after completing the ESA50A in January of this year, my husband has been put in the Support Group without a medical. I really could not have done it without your help on this forum and I thank you all for your unending support. He got his letter Monday this week. So, he waited 8 months + for the result. I hope this gives hope for those of you that are still waiting.
