ESA Reporting Changes Booklet (ESACOC 02/24) - Savings Threshold

Hi, i've recently received my ESA benefit uprating letter detailing the new rate effective from April 2026, along with the ESA Reporting changes booklet.

The reporting changes booklet (I may be wrong but I think this is the first time i've had one), states that capital and assets in excess of £6000 should be reported along with any subsequent changes. I've always been aware of the £6000 savings threshold and indeed the higher threshold of £16000 for means tested benefits. But as my benefits are not means tested I understood that these thresholds were not relevant to my circumstance and as such I assumed (and have never been asked or told) that I need to report changes in relation to savings amounts.

My question is, as I don't receive any means tested benefits but my savings are over the threshold do I have to report them? If I do how often and how do I report any changes to my savings amount as obviously they increase/decrease probably weekly.

For context I've been receiving contribution based ESA (Support Group) along with PIP daily living (standard) and mobility (enhanced) benefits for roughly the last 10 years or more. All of which I understand to be non means tested benefits.

I've also recently been switched from 'Old Style' Contribution Based ESA to 'New Style' Contribution based ESA, which I understand to be a change in name only.

Any help advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi TigMan

Welcome to the forum.

You might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is; www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/guides-for-claimants/faq/forum.

I would agree with you, NS ESA is non means tested benefit and is based on your contributions.

We would advise you to seek specialist advice from your local Welfare Rights Organisation: advicelocal.uk where they can take all your circumstances into consideration when giving you advice.

The leaflet was intended for people who were in receipt of income related ESA although some of the information does also relate to contributions based ESA (such as reporting changes to a medical condition, change of name, address, bank account, telephone number). I wonder if the DWP are simply using up old stocks of the leaflet? They really shouldn't be sending out the leaflet to people who are only in receipt of contributory or New Style ESA.
