My partner and me have been moved to UC recently. Everything went ok apart from having our Rent and Council tax paid , we are now told that our income is to high to qualify for any council tax rebate. We do not get any more money but we are lumped with a £2200 council tax bill. I myself are a recent pensioner but cant apply for pension credit because my partner is below pension age. Any advise in how to tackle this. Thanks
You will find that whenever there are changes to rules and regulations there will be opportunists who take advantage of them for their own agenda. This is the case with the Council Tax hikes throughout the UK experienced by new UC claimants particularly the disabled. This manipulation of Council Tax rules means that Benefit claimants on exactly the same income can suddenly find themselves paying double the Council Tax as before. As every local council has a different Council Tax support scheme I would advise you to contact your local Citizens Advice or other local Advice organisation to check that their new rules apply to you.
Let me know how you get on. David
