Hi,
I'm glad to see this forum is still going strong, I received extremely valuable advice historically.
Many years ago I received an inheritance. I notified the DWP in writing and they transferred my ESA from income-based to contribution based. I also informed my local council so that my housing benefit and council tax benefit claims were discontinued.
That inheritance is nearly depleted and I will be down to below £16,000 within the next couple of months.
My questions are:
1. Should I write to the DWP again to ask them to transfer me back to income-based ESA?
2. With regard to housing benefit, do I apply to my council again? Or do I need to apply for UC?
3. I'm unclear on the amount of ESA and/or housing benefit I would be entitled to with savings of just below £16,000. Could someone explain please?

I need to correct your post, we hear on the forum quite frequently members stating they were transferred on to contribution based ESA.
This is incorrect, quite often claimants get both IR ESA and CB ESA, when you received your inheritance over £16k you would have lost your IR ESA but kept your CB ESA.
IR ESA is no longer available for new claimants, claimants now have to apply for UC. When you apply for UC your CB ESA will be taken into account £ for £.
You will not be eligible to claim Housing Benefit if you are under state pension age unless you live in specified accommodation. When you apply for UC you will also get help towards your housing cost, if it is eligible. Under UC this is know as Housing Element.
