Pip-change of circumstances during review.

Hello,
I hope this is ok to post as I’ve scrolled through as much as I can and I can’t find a relevant post that answers my queries.

Some background. I applied for pip in May 2022 and after going through the whole DWP process I received nothing. I was persuaded to go to tribunal and with support was awarded low care, high mobility for 3 years.

The review process started in feb 2025 and after a couple of extensions, with support the review form was sent back. My original award was extended to May 2026 to allow for the review process.

Yesterday I got a text stating that the health care professional had sent their report dwp their report and I should hear the decision within 6 weeks. I know this happens and a paper review can be done but I have various questions regarding this. Sorry.

1- both my physical and mental health have deteriorated since the review documents went in. So much so that I had an OT asessment yesterday and one of my MH workers supported me with that. I know you can’t tell me what to do but at this stage in the review process is there any benefit from contact the dwp to highlight the changes?

2- the MH support I’m getting is incredible. I am so lucky as I know not everyone gets this. I am 53 and having been through the MH system many times in my life, I am being ‘seen’ for the first time in my life. Some of the difficulties I have are related to communication. I mask (a LOT) and struggle to express what is going on for me. I rely heavily on my partner (ashamedly so) and when things get overwhelming he speaks for me. This is so hard to write but I need advice. Sorry. Ok so even in phone calls I struggle. I just want to ask about gp notes not reflecting what actually happened/happens. The DWP applied for my gp notes and I know in there are some discrepancies. Health care professions not recording correctly about the interactions. For instance…… spoke to T (me) about….. blah blah blah. Which initially I tried to respond but got so overwhelmed my partner took over with my permission. This has not been recorded. I was too worried about having this corrected I left it. Now I’m worrying that this will be seen in my gp notes and will go against me. Especially as I’ve said I struggle. Are you aware of this happening and what can I do (or my partner more likely) if this is raised as a problem?

3- saying how I feel and how things are affecting me is almost impossible. I’m working on it BUT it’s difficult. Hence why the MH worker attended the OT appointment with me. Said MH worker knows how distressed and anxious I am about the whole pip review process and had offered to attend any pip appointments with me. If I raise a change of circumstance would this instigate a different approach? Ie would it result in an actual appt rather than a paper review? In your experience.?

4- I have multiple referrals I’m waiting for since sending my review forms in. Such as Cardiology, pain clinic referral, waiting for an mri, also to see an orthopaedic surgeon. I’ve also had bloods and now further blood tests and investigations are being done. Are these relevant to highlight a deterioration and would it delay any decision made? Again in your experience?

I’ll stop there for the time being. Before I go though I just want to say I used your guides to fill out the review forms. Wonder if that is why they are doing a paper review as opposed to a telephone? Your guides are worth their weight in gold. Thank you.

Thanks in advance for your reply too.
Kind regards and thank you for everything you do. This process is barbaric, humiliating and so difficult but you shine a light for us all. ✨

Hi Tracey

1. The report has been done - and anything you send in now will have no impact on the outcome. If you want the information added to your file for future reference then you should send it in.

2. You're overthinking this. I think most people looking at their GP notes would question the accuracy of some of the information that has been recorded. GPs work in a hurry and write what they think is right and they don't change it. I can't tell you whether the DWP will raise it, but I doubt it. If they do, you have to say that it is incorrect. You can't do anything about it, so try not to worry about it. You will just add to your stress, churning it over in your mind. This is not something you have any control over.

3. A paper-based assessment has been done, so there is no other assessment to be done. They are now looking to make the decision. If you raise a change of circumstances (and I don't know why you would), that means they will make the current decision, and then they will probably send you a new review form, and you will be going through the process again.

4. The decision is being made. As far as the DWP is concerned, referrals are not generally a proof of deterioration - they are proof that something is going to be investigated. The DWP has no idea what the result of any investigation will be, so it won't impact any decision.

Glad you found the guides useful
