Hi, long time subscriber but my first post! Apologies in advance if I can't post this here!
My hubby and myself were told to migrate from ESA (income based) to Universal Credit. We started the process of a linked Universal Credit application last week.
My husband's is straightforward, he is disabled and should just be migrated and get transitional protection for his disability premium, I'm his carer, I don't work, caring for his substantial health needs is 24/7. On the Universal Credit migration application I was asked about if I had health issues, I do have several so I answered honestly, It then came up on my to do list to provide a fit note. I have never needed one before and thought, as a carer, it wouldn't be needed. I've twice left messages on my journal requesting clarification with no response. Today I saw my GP and discussed this, they gave me a fit note for 3 months saying I have my own health issues that should be taken into account and I could get more money. I came home and released I had read somewhere that any changes could put my husbands transitional protection of his disability premium at risk. Can anyone advise me, I haven't submitted the fit note yet. can I be registered as unfit to work and also still be classed as a carer? will it affect transitional protection?

Hi Beefair71

Yes, you can post in here - welcome to the forum.

When you were on ESA - even though you were your husband's carer - were they aware that you were sick as well? It seems some couples have found they have both automatically been moved across and told that because they were previously on ESA they didn't need to provide a fit not - and others have been told they have to. As you haven't had any clarification on your journal I would ring the UC helpline and ask
0800 328 5644
I can't see that providing a fit note should have any impact on your transitional protection, but you need clarification from the DWP.
