Early Pension and legacy benefits was created by roadrunner
Hello, I received a letter from a company that I worked a few years for 35 years ago regarding the private work pension i was on. I have to submit the pension forms soon by my 60th birthday. I joined their scheme where the pension age is 60. I cannot delay it. It is a small amount 110 pounds or so a month. I could also take a lump sum and have a reduced monthly amount. I have to decide what is best for my circumstance so they tell me. I am currently on ESA in support group and old housing benefit (not lha).
My questions are...
1. will the monthly pension amount i receive be taken as income £ for £ from both my esa and housing benefit, so as an example £110 taken from esa and again from housing benefit making it a £220 deduction. Effectively £110 worse off?
2. If I went for a lump sum option and it put me £500 over £6000 for savings, will £2 (500/250) be taken from esa and again from housing benefit, so £4 in total?
For the future, as we all will be migrating to universal credit - still awaiting letter, will the above answers differ if I were on UC.
Thank you kindly

Hi roadrunner,
Do you receive Contributions Based ESA solely or both Conts Based ESA and Income Based ESA ( as a top up )?

Hi roadrunner,
DWP income based Benefits are passporting Benefits to Housing Benefit adminstered by the Local Authority.
As such your deduction whether it be for pension income or savings above the threshold is only taken once and that is from the DWP Benefit.
The treatment regarding pension income is the same for both UC and Income Based ESA.
But for UC the deduction for every £250 savings above the £6000 threshold is £4.35 per month and for ESA it is £1.00 per week.
