Dear fellow members and moderators,

I am wondering if, on the Eating and Drinking (Nutrition) section part of PIP:

PIP can refuse to take into account the fact I use modified chunky cutlery (as an aid )
when no medical professional advised me to use modified cutlery?
(As nobody wrote a letter to advise me to use them, I just do as it is easier for me to eat)

I use it because of Osteoarthritis of my fingers with deformities of joints (medical proof of that)
Synovial thickening of dorsal wrists (proof of that)
Osteoarthritis of my shoulders (proof of that)
Tears of shoulders (proof of that)
Osteoarthritis of elbows (proof of that)
I drop things (proof of that on surgery notes printout)
Weakness of fingers, wrists, shoulders (proof of that on MSK physiotherapist letter)
OA of the jaw (Consultant of the jaw letter) as a result I eat soft things or need someone to cut meat, harder things with a knife for me.

I thank you very much.
Best wishes

Hi VIA

The DWP often ignores what claimants say whether it is backed up with medical evidence or not, and there is often no obvious rhyme or reason for it. Put in your evidence that you use adapted cutlery. It doesn't matter that a specialist hasn't told you to use it - you have proof of your disabilities and that's all that should matter. Using adapted cutlery is a sensible thing to do, if it enables you to eat more easily. If you didn't use it - there's a chance you would be asked about it anyway.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems
