Universal credit - first "0" and amount in the negative

Hello Gary
Welfare rights organisations where I live are Citizens Advice or Age Uk. Neither understand universal credit enough to be able to help. With Citizens Advice there is no longer the option of speaking with a general helpline to see if there may be someone more experienced in benefits/universal credit as they just direct you back to your local CAB. I have contacted Moneywise who say they do not help with universal; Turn2us who say they just signpost, Scope, who have been the most helpful, they too say speak to a welfare rights organisation. Who are these welfare rights organisations? Any other thoughts on who to contact? Thankyou Jane

Hi Jane52

12 month period which may apply from when the DWP decide that you are gainfully self-employed, regardless of when your self_employment began. During a start-up period, your UC is worked out using your actual income. You will be expected to take steps to increase your earnings, and if you do not do so, the start-up period may end.

If you make a loss in one assessment period, you are allowed to offset this deficit against any profit in future monthly assessment periods.

A 55% taper is applied to your earnings, after deductions (tax and NI) and applying any appropriate work allowance. This gives you your Earned income figure.

In regards to your question what can you do not to score "0" again, we cannot tell you as we do not know your circumstances, seek advice from your local Welfare Rights Organisation.
