If a person on ESA support group due to disability has received a letter in relation to a pension they have from a long time ago when could work. Do they have to take this and declare before retirement age or are they allowed to defer?? it is around £20,000 which if taken as lump sum would put them outwith the criteria for benefits. Would DWP be in touch to ask why deferral???

I'm afraid we can't answer your question.

You have a contract between you and your pension provider, only they can tell you if you can defer the payments.

As to the DWP, you won't be penalised for deferring while you are under State Retirement Age.
