You will need to submit a claim and get a 'fit' note from your GP to stop work.
Your claim will be processed and you will probably be called to a face to face medical assessment. ESA assessment rate is payable for 13 weeks. If you are not assessed within this time you may have to claim Income Support to tide you over until your claim is assessed.

Many thanks
Hi lt2011,
Payment of Contribution Based (CB) ESA whilst not in The Support Group, so that includes whilst in The Assessment Phase and/or in The WRAG, is limited to 365 days.
If any part of your ESA payments are Income Related (IR) ESA no such 365 days limit applies.
If you are placed into The SG, again, there is no 365 day rule and you will continue to receive CB ESA for as long as you remain in The SG
If you are paid CB ESA alone, once you have exhausted your 365 days entitlement to payment you should be assessed to see whether you can pass the means test for entitlement to payment of IR ESA instead.
This FAQ should help explain it :
12 Month Limit for ESA(CB)

Hi h1,
See my response above your post !
Yes, when you have gone through The ESA WCA, whenever that may be, any award, WRAG or SG will be back dated to the start of week 14 of your ESA claim for a fresh claim.
In case of a transfer over from IB, IS or SDA, or the reassessment of a current award, the award would be active from the date of the award.
