Queries PIP and Help grants. was created by LadyLuna
First of all, I have a lifetime DLA award for an injury to my arm and hand. Under the current criteria I probably wouldn't get PIP for it as my award is lower rate, however that doesn't negate the problems I get with it.

I get ESA Support group due to obesity, autoimmune disease and quite severe mobility issues with my a chilled tendon and foot which is believed to be related to the autoimmune disease. The obesity is certainly not helped by lack of ability to exercise.

I am not sure when PIP is due for me. Having done the B&W test I should get 8 points for Personal component and 14 points for Mobility.

I am rather worried as I have been reading that claimed ts migrating to PIP are losing out. My ESA is based mostly upon my mobility and I wondered if there was any joined up thinking between the ESA and PIP departments when claiming? i.e. The fact you have been granted support group in one for the same conditions.

Second query is maybe not something B&W can directly advise upon but may know where to go for help.

About 8 years ago I got a Community Care Grant to get a new mattress because of my size. I know the CCG is no longer. I need to get a mattress which will support me and these seem to come out at around £600-800 each. My mattress is terrible and I need a replacement because it is causing my further pain and bad sleep but on ESA, not a chance. Does anyone know if there is any help given fir such things which is not a repayable loan? I just couldn't afford it.

Many thanks.

It is important to understand that the PIP activities have been deliberately designed to reduce the disability budget by at least 20% as a consequence a lot of current DLA claim will be reduced and a lot will be removed.

Mobility is one of the areas where ESA and PIP overlap. If you are in the SG due to your mobility then you have been assessed as being unable to walk more than 50m, this would correspond to a Standard Mobility award for PIP.

However, whilst the DWP can refer to your ESA award they do not have to, also, when you are assessed for PIP the DWP will be looking at how you are then and may well argue that the ESA assessment is out of date, you will need to deal with these issues when you complete the form.

With regard the mattress, all I can suggest is that you try contact the CAB in your area, they may know of help that you can get.

Ok thank you Gordon.

I haven't had the PIP call yet. Not sure when I will be asked to apply for it. All very scary especially as cuts are constant at the moment.
