Yes, this sort of equipment can work out to be rather expensive. and therefore precludes most people from being able to use it !!
This is the type of equipment that is currently used by Maximus to record ESA Assessments
As you state the equipment must be capable of producing two simultaneous copies on CD or tape so that one copy can be handed to the HP at the end of the interview.
You could search around on ebay, etc, but you would have to check first that any equipment that you intended to use was compliant with their requirements.
As an alternative, you could covertly record the face to face on a Dictaphone.
However, you would need to ensure that the assessor did not become aware that you were doing so, as if they do, they can stop the assessment and refuse to carry on.
You could have someone present, a companion is allowed to take notes !!

I do remember a member who challenged the technical requirement that the DWP had set and was able to use two personal cassettes recorders to make the recording, however, you are probably still looking at £50-£60 if you do not already own them.

Are you sure that this was for PIP as the DWP have told the Assessment Providers for PIP not to offer recording facilities?

It looks like xpgm is referring to their ESA face to face, and not PIP :
