We noticed this change from distance to time on a number of posts recently, it does not appear to be a change in guidance or if it is, it's not in the public domain.

Unfortunately while most claimants will no accurately how far they can walk, I doubt that many have the faintest idea as to how long the can walk.

The average walking speed for a healthy adult is about 90m/min, that means they will walk 200m, the upper limit for scoring points for PIP, in about 3 minutes 15 seconds.

It's also easy to wrongly calculate distance if you are not used to considering the problem and do not have a reference distance to compare it to. For example; where I live there are two supermarkets, I would estimate the aisle in one is about 40m whereas it is probably 75m in the other,

More "dirty" tricks by the assessors I'm afraid.

Gordon,

About walking speeds and the tricks that are of concern to anybody facing assessment for ESA or PIP.

What does 90m/sec mean?

I had assumed that m/sec means metres per second and that the average walking speed of an unimpaired adult is about 1 metre per second.

Sorry to sound daft and thanks in advance for clarification.

Mari

It should have been 90m/min.

Sorry, Gordon, I made a typo.

What does 90m/min mean? 90 metres in 1 minute?

(I'm sitting here wondering what it must be like.)
