DLA Higher Rate Mobility was created by cuchillo
Hi Can anyone advise me or give an opinion?

I have been on DLA Higher Rate Mobility for about 31 years and currently in another Motability Lease contract with Nissan since Oct 2014.

I am in terrible pain all the time and need to request a total left hip replacement asap.

Therefore I will need to inform the DLA once I have hip replacement. My other medical conditions are arthritis in other joints including knees, neck and spine. Had right hip replaced in 2006.
Also have clinical depression and genetic ischemic heart disease and angina plus recently diagnosed with Cirrhosis of the Liver.

I managed to get off Incapacity benefit in 2012 and have now been working in Manchester for 3 years which means I need to drive to my local train station in my Motability Car and then get train to Manchester each morning and back home again to the station were my car is parked each day and then drive home from local station.

I believe once I contact the DWP about my upcoming left hip replacement they will review me under the new PIP process and most likely cancel my benefit permanently. This would mean I would lose my Motability car and then I would have to resign from my job in Manchester as I couldn't get to the train station each morning to catch train to Manchester without my Motability car.

Can anyone hold out any hope for me, as if I lose my Motability car and that then means I have to lose my job, [phrase removed]. I am aged 58.

You do not need to contact the DWP prior to the surgery only afterwards.

If you are on the UK mainland then notifying the DWP will likely result in you being asked to claim PIP, but you would still be required to notify the DWP even if PIP did not exist and if your mobility improves then your award, PIP or DLA, would always be at risk.

You obviously have other health issues from your post and these may still impact on your mobility so you cannot assume that you will not qualify for an award. I would start by having a look at our PIP Claim guide and in particular the information about Moving Around and the use of the word "reliably" in looking at what a claimant is capable of. See

If you have any detailed questions about the process then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.
