I have been referred to Work Program- can they make you work in a charity shop or do voluntary work, and what are work placements?

The rules for the Work Program are substantially the same as those for advisors at JC+.

As far as I am aware you can only be asked to do voluntary work, the decision to do so would be yours, however, that does not mean that your WP advisor will not pressure on you to comply, any request should be made in writing and it should be clear whether the activity is mandated or not.

Work Placements are a very specific form of voluntary work, they are hosted by commercial organisations, as opposed to the more usual charity, although the "work" must be still be for the benefit of the community. Work Placements can be mandated although the advisor must still take into account any limitations that result from your conditions. Again, whether the activity is mandated or not should be detailed on any letter detailing the activity.
