DLA to PIP was created by Shan B
Please could you tell me if it is better to try and get a PIP assessment before I am 64 - or hope and pray that I don't get called up until after I am 64?

Thank you for your help - general information - I have severe (but partially corrected) congenital feet deformities long, long, list of surgery to feet, and have had kidney cancer and now have a new secondary tumour on my lung - had two secondary tumours removed end of 2013.

Hi SB,

Welcome to Benefits and Work :)

I am really sorry to read of your on-going health issues !! :(

I am not quite sure why you are referencing reaching "64" ?

If you currently have Indefinite DLA Award/s and were below 65 years old on 08/04/13 you will be invited to transfer over to PIP sometime after October 2015 running until October 2017.

Claimants with Indefinite DLA Awards will be "invited" at random within that 2 years period.

The only reference to age that I can see being applicable is 65 !

In as much as, if you are currently in receipt of Mobility Component DLA, and invited to claim PIP after you reach 65 and fail to get any PIP Award, that you could not make a fresh claim for PIP as you would be over 65, and would therefore only be able to claim Attendance Allowance which does not have a Mobility Component ?

The above is pure supposition of course as you have not provided a great deal of detail.

The "walking" test for PIP is a lot harder to qualify under, than that of DLA.

If you did self-select to transfer to PIP before being "invited" to transfer over by The DWP, there would be no going back to DLA !!

You need to have a good think about this before making a decision, as only you can make this decision.

You could try and gain professional advice from CAB, DIAL Age UK or the like.

You could take our : PIP Self Test which may give you some idea how you may stand with PIP qualification.

You could also read through our : PIP Claims Guide. (2nd Link on page)

If you have a current DLA Award, that will continue after reaching 65, as long as you continue to fulfil the qualifying criteria that gave you the award.

If you go through the transfer to PIP before or after 65 and gain a PIP Award, again, payments will continue for as long as you fulfil the qualifying PIP criteria.

If I have misinterpreted your query, or you have any further queries, please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.
