Mobility element PIP was created by J Thompson
Hi, has anyone been in a similar position?
I have been awarded both parts of PIP at the standard rate.
This is my first claim as I am struggling to manage with painful osteoarthritis. I was so grateful for help within the home, but because I can walk just over 20 meters using elbow crutches and with pain,I have been awarded 10points, but need 12 to be able to lease a motability car.
I was hoping that a Personal Independant Payment would be my lifeline to be independent again, by using a car with a hoist to help me be able to lift the little scooter I purchased years ago,and be able to go to work and shop and visit grandchildren on my own.Otherwise I always need my smiling but long suffering husband with me to lift the scooter out of the boot and put it together for me, as it is impossible to do myself now.
However although I want to ask for the mandatory reconsideration(only one week after award given) having read various articles, I am scared that I may lose what I have been offered.
Please if anyone has any ideas what I should do,I would be very grateful to hear from you.
Thank you for your time.Jill

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

There are risks associated with making a challenge to a Decision, they may be low but we do have members reporting that their existing award has been reduced or removed when they have requested an MR or gone to appeal.

There are two things you need to consider, how strong is your existing award, from what you have posted your 10 points seem to be consistent with how the Decision Maker sees your problems, they have awarded 10 points for your needing aids (the crutches) rather than just the 8 they could have for the distance.

I'm afraid you also need to look at your Daily Living award, whilst you can request the DWP only look at the Mobility component, they are entitled to look at the whole award.

Secondly you need to look at how likely you are to gain the extra two points for an Enhanced award. You don't mention any problems with your Going Out so I assume that your problems are limited your walking so to score the 12 points you will need to show that it is limited to 1m-20m.

You mention that you are in pain, activities must be done "reliably", this means

• Safely – in a fashion that is unlikely to cause harm to themselves or to another person.
• To a necessary and appropriate standard – given the nature of the activity.
• Repeatedly – as often as is reasonably required.
• In a timely manner – in a reasonable time period.

Have a look at our PIP Claim guide for more information about this. See

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip

If you decide to go ahead with the MR then our PIP MR & Appeal guide explains the process and has template letters that you can use to make the request.

If you have any further questions then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.
