I want to claim Carer's Allowance, but can I claim this if I get ESA?
Thanks.
It will depend on the type of ESA you receive and your personal circumstances.
If you only receive Contribution Based ESA then CA is classed as an overlapping benefit and will not be paid (see below).
If you receive Income Related ESA then you can claim CA, the CA main payment will be treated as income and deducted from your ESA(IR) leaving no net change, but you will also be entitled to the Carers Premium so your weekly payments will increase by £34.60.
If you are only receiving ESA(CB) then you may be entitled to an ESA(IR) top up which would allow the payment of the Carers Premium. ESA(IR) is dependant on your household income, your savings and assets, and any hours that your partner works. See
If you think that you would be eligible then you need to contact the DWP that deals with your claim and request an ESA3 form which will allow the DWP to check your eligibility for ESA(IR).
