ESA support group permitted work was created by Healthhunter
Could anyone please shed any light on this very complex and confusing issue.
I am in receipt of ESA support and I am wanting to try to work a few hours a week. There is no way I could hold down a conventional job. Having looked on line and spoken to a DWP advisor I am now even more confused.
My understanding is that I can work a maximum of 15 hours and earn £104 without losing my ESA.
I understood from the DWP advisor that it was down to me to find this work but having searched on line it appears I have to be 'supervised' by local authority or charity and hove this permitted work 'approved'.
I am worried that I will lose my benefits if I try to find work independently but if I don't try to work again I'll never know if I could hold down a job. It's catch 22 situation. I don't want to be unwittingly committing fraud.

There are two "flavours" of Permitted Work (PW).
You can work any number of hours earning no more than £20/week, this is called PW at the Lower Earnings Limit, or you can work less than 16 hours per week and earn up to £104/week, this is the PW Upper Earning limit.
Whilst there is a form of PW which is called Supported PW, it is only used in a limited number of cases.
You must seek the agreement of the DWP to the work your are going to do before you start or you risk being classed as in remunerative work and having your ESA claim closed, this is usually a formality.
There is a guide to PW in our Members Only area. See
