Hello I'm new. I need your help please was created by Elayne Chandler
My daughter is on high rate care & mobility dla. She turns 16 next month and I've had a letter asking about appointees & pip etc... I'm really confused by all this and don't know what to do. I'm not thick but I am terrified by the Dwp. Plus I'm really not well which doesn't help. Don't really know what to put here but will answer any questions asked. Thank you. X

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

I don't want to cause you additional stress, but you must deal with these matters as soon as possible as there is a risk that your daughters DLA claim will be closed.

As her parent you will have been deemed to be her appointee in regard to benefits, when she turns 16 she has the right, assuming that she is capable, of taking on these responsibilities herself. The DWP are contacting you to see whether the this is feasible or not. You need to reply to their letter to let them know, if you do not think that she is capable of doing this then the DWP will want to come and see you and your daughter so they can decide whether you can continue to be her appointee.

With regard to PIP, you need to see whether this is an informational letter telling you that they are delaying your daughters transfer to PIP, all 16 year olds are to be transferred to PIP from DLA, or whether they are inviting her to now claim PIP.

If the latter then you only have four weeks from the date of the letter to make a new claim for PIP, there will instructions in the letter on how you do this. If you fail to make a claim within the four weeks then your daughters DLA will be suspended, the DWP will contact you and will have a further four week to start a claim. If you have not made a claim after 8 weeks (4 + 4) then your daughters DLA claim will be closed.

Claiming PIP is covered in our PIP Claim guide. See

If you have any questions, then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.

I am so glad I asked the question. Thank you. I wasn't aware it was time limited or as serious as that. I will ring them tomorrow. My daughter is very behind. Her age physically may be 16 but that's about it. Her bank account is linked to mine so I would be happy for her money to go in there for her. It is used for her.
I will read the guides also. We really need the money. We only have my husbands wages coming in as I can't work anymore. Hence why I'm terrified of doing this.
Thank you.

I rang this morning and I was told that she cannot claim pip yet as she is not 16 till the end of April. I have also been advised that my daughter needs an appointee. I have filled in the form and sent it off. Thank you for your help & advice.
