ESA PIP CARER.... was created by Mya123
Hi I'm new to this site and require some advice please? I recently was awarded PIP & have a carer who was on ESA contribution based therefore did not receive carers allowance. However their contribution base ended & is now on income related ESA. I am in receipt of PIP & income support - I tried work last year & lasted a month & returned to benefit. I have bipolar disorder with a young daughter & prior to my one month period of employment two years previous I worked for 6 months as carer & again fell bipolar impacted upon me & returned to the world of benefits, God loves a trier! Ok I have two queries; my daughter turns five at the end of this month and I am applying for ESA as for now I am unfit too work and don't know the process? Also my carer is in the assessment phase where no group as been allocated to him as yet; but has been sent a 'ESA GROUP Session' to attend. Does DWP give room for flexibility in regards to waver these appointments for carers especially while they are not only caring for someone but also attending too their health needs? Bearing in mind a carer cares 35 hours per week & we all have different caring needs? Advice is appreciated

You can either apply for ESA over the phone or by completing the application form and mailing it to the DWP, the following explains the process in more detail
www.gov.uk/employment-support-allowance/how-to-claim
You might also want to have a loom at our Understanding ESA and ESA Claim guides o the following link
www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/esa1
Anyone receiving ESA and not in the Support Group, can be required to attend Work Focussed Interviews, being a carer does not exempt them but the DWP should be able to make reasonable accommodations for there caring responsibilities, they need to speak to the JC+ advisor who has requested the meeting about this.
As an aside, if your carer is now receiving ESA(IR) then they should be entitled to the Carers Premium (about £30/week), if they are not receiving this they should contact the DWP office dealing with their claim.
