Hi to everyone,

I helped my friend who has mental health problems last year with the help of your guides
and she was awarded ESA support group without a medical at 13 wks of her claim, it was
a transfer from IB that she had claimed for around 5 yrs previously.ESA is income
based by the way.

She's received at letter from the Jobcentre a few days ago with an appointment for next
week to go into the jobcentre to check she is receiving the correct benefits. So it says.
My question is this mandatory or voluntary ? She's in a right state over this and I
would appreciate any advise

Providing your friend is still in the Support Group then they are not required to attend WFIs or to participate in Work Related Activity, nor can they be mandated to do so, however, this appointment may not be classed as a WFI or WRA.

I would suggest that she contact the advisor in question to find out specifically what the interview is about and whether her attendance is required or not, especially if any of her stated limitations would restrict her from attending at a JC+ office.

As an aside, if they were transferred from IB then they will be receiving ESA(CB) probably with a an ESA(IR) top-up.

Hi Gordon, thanks for your reply,

The letter just says that an appointment has been made on monday at 2.30pm to attend an interview with an advisor with regard to checking if she is claiming the right benefits, although
there is nothing mentioned that she has to take any proof of ESA IR, like bank statements
and such & no mention of anything to do with work or work related at all, I know
that being in support group she isn't required to take part in work related activity ,shes
frightened they will stop her money.
I know she won't be going cos she won't be able to face it, shes not slept for 2 nights
worried to death poor lass.
Yes she does get a top up of IR ESA

The worst thing she can do is simply not turn up! This is how you get your payments suspended!

If she is unable to phone the JC+ herself, then she needs to get someone to phone on her behalf, she will need to be available to answer the security questions and to authorise someone to speak on her behalf to the advisor, but then the other person can take over on the phone.
