The request has to be in writing, there is a template letter you can use in the ESA Claim guides.
You need to keep phoning ATOS for an update, not everyday, but at least once a week. I think it unlikely that they will tell you if they decide to refuse a home assessment, they will just expect you to attend the appointment that is currently booked. They will tell you if they decide on a home assessment, most likely with a new appointment letter. You need the notice so that you can plan how to get there if the decision is against you.

Thank you for this Gordon. I will get the letter off ASAP.
I did read in the leaflet WCA AL1C 04/14 that they have no legal obligation to provide an audio recording service or equipment. And there is no legal right to an audio recorded assessment.
I shall keep you informed. Many thanks.

I have some news.
The new appointment for 22nd November had been cancelled by Atos before they could have got the letter about the recording equipment - we would have each received the respective letters on the same day. The new appointment was for tomorrow.
Yesterday I thought it would be prudent to telephone Atos with regards my medical which is dated tomorrow.
I spent 3 hours on the phone being pushed from pillar to post. A total of 10 telephone calls.
The first point was whether there was any answer to my doctors medical evidence. I eventually found out that they were looking at it 'today', (Monday).
Secondly, I had had no reply as to whether my letter about recording the interview had arrived and if they would have it for the appointment they had made for me. This necessitated being put through to appointments to make yet another appointment just in case they hadn't got the recording equipment for tomorrow.
Eventually I got through to a woman who was looking up to find out whether they ever got the letter about the recording equipment, (no-one had a letter on their system even though I sent it Next Day Recorded Delivery).
Suddenly the woman informs me a decision has been made and I do not have to attend a medical. I questioned her and she told me again and said the decision had been made that day. She couldn't say how long it was for but I would get a letter ASAP.
Now, I am not going to count my chickens, but it sounds promising.
However, I am extremely disappointed at the lack of joined up thinking that necessitated 10 phone calls. I managed to cope with it all, just. Some people out there would end up in a terrible state going backwards and forwards.
So, a very tentative YAY! Thank you B&W - But will confirm when a letter arrives!

It does sound promising but if you have only been talking to ATOS then they do not make a Decision on your claim, only a recommendation, it will be down to a DWP Decision Maker to decide what award to make.
I am afraid that we have no detailed statistics as to how often the DM accepts or rejects the assessor's recommendation, from the forum they seem to be far more active in their decision making that we have seen with other benefits such as ESA, so you will need to wait until the DWP have processed the report and made a Decision before you start any form of celebration.
Decision times have been improving but it could still take 5-6 weeks before you hear anything.
Good luck

Hope you all had a good Christmas/Holiday and New Year.
Well the news is good. Before Christmas I got a letter from the DWP indeed confirming I did not have to struggle to a medical and will remain on ESA Support Group. I want to say thank you to Gordon and all at the B&W forum for all your brilliant help and advice when things get tough. You really are heroes!
