I think you would need to get proper advice, in this case from his accountant before trying to do this, my suspicion is that you are swapping problems with the DWP for ones with HMRC.
Such a reduction might make some level of ESA(IR) possible if you are viewed as a couple, but it would still be borderline and I cannot state for certain whether it would remain in payment.

They may have suspended this pending the return of the ESA3 but you will need to confirm this with the DWP.
I am afraid that SMI is another passported benefit dependant on your remaining eligible for ESA(IR).

I'm not aware of any time limits for SMI where ESA(IR) is being paid, you should contact the DWP about why the payments have been stopped.
