The number of universal credit claimants who were hit with a sanction reached a record high in October 2024, raising doubts over Labour’s willingness to support rather than punish claimants.

According to official statistics, there were 61,527 adverse sanction decisions in October 2024, the highest number ever recorded.  The previous highest was in January 2024, when 57,192 claimants were sanctioned.

In November 2024, 5.5% of UC claimants who were in the conditionality regimes where sanctions can be applied, were subject to a sanction. This is down by 0.1% from August 2024.

Failure to attend or participate in a mandatory interview accounted for over 90% of all sanctions.

Sanction figures by month for 2024, up to October, the most recent month for which statistics are available, are as follows:

Jan       57,192

Feb      49,488

March  51,091

April    49,986

May     48,672

June     46,969

July      54,368

Aug      49,554

Sept     55,675

Oct      61,527

Many claimants had hoped that Labour would immediately introduce a less punitive regime when they took control of the DWP.  However, figures for their first few months in office suggest that little has changed so far.

You can read the full sanctions statistics here.

I hope Labour keep their words soft and sweet over all these proposed cuts because they may have to eat them.

Labour cut cut cut, by placing the disabled who can't work into a cohort to search for work the unemployment numbers will shoot up, when people on the breadline have no money they'll turn to nefarious activities in order to put food on the table, then they won't have money to pay their bills, they won't have money to pay into the system so other people will lose their jobs leading to more unemployed and more benefits claimants. Cuts will leave more needing NHS support also which will place further stress onto the system...does the "tough love" brigade ever think about anyone but themselves?

Be careful what you wish for and don't think for one second that Labour won't abolish the Triple Lock or cut the State Pension. All of this means that Reform will win the next election.

@Elizabeth Vidler Labour are harsher on the disabled than Tories are. It was Labour who introduced the disastrous ESA, and essentially abolished Income Support.

According to The National (Scottish newspaper) Labour are going to abolish the LWCRA tier of UC entirely.

@Lill Just watch Channel Four's interview with Stephen Timms. They are starting to be more open about how harsh they are going to be.

@CJA As Jeremy Corbyn showed the rich and powerful will not allow a real Labour government to take office.

These sanctions don't affect those on LCWRA though do they?

Personally, I think they will attempt to remove the limited capability on UC.

Labour aren't bothered about getting people into work, they are bothered about finding billions to fund the catastrophic budget Reeves gave, and which is now filtering down to the economy.

She messed up big time with her socialist agenda, and benefit cuts is the only thing that will get her out of this mess, for the short term.

Whether this gets through parliament is another thing entirely, but it's going to be hell for hundreds of thousands of people who will lose around £5k pa, if it does.

@Michael If Labour want to find a billion pounds they should find out who received the trillon pounds  that the Conservatives gave out to the super rich during Covid and get some of that money back.  After that a progressive wealth tax of some kind or another.

@Alex The Tories said they would leave existing claimants. Labour will not be so kind. So, yes, the Tories were the lesser of two evils by some margin.

@Rik Hardly worse than the Tories though, they're about the same in my book.  They are both awful.

I voted Green and warned everyone I could about Labour.

"Many claimants had hoped that Labour would immediately introduce a less punitive regime when they took control of the DWP. However, figures for their first few months in office suggest that little has changed so far."

Labour are now just a Tory tribute act and in some ways even worse.

There must be many Labour supporters disillusioned with the way Labour are governing, there isn't a cigarette paper between Labour or the Tories.

Always remember that Liz Kendall and Rachel Reeves have for over a decade wanted to be "tougher than the Tories" on benefits, I think alienating disabled voters and Elderly voters with the Winter Fuel Allowance fiasco will come back to haunt Labour at the ballot box.

@TMD I know how you feel, but if you don't vote in a GE, you can't legitimately complain about the Government you get. But I do worry about voter apathy - this will only lead to more extremism

@Dave Dee I voted Labour as I thought they could not possibly be worse than the Tories - how wrong I was! I expected them to immediately abolish sanctions and the 'bedroom tax' but no, they picked on pensioners, small businesses, ordinary working people and farmers.

I will never vote for them again and if there isn't anything better than them come election time I won't vote at all.

@K Not helped by the delays to Access to Work.

Forty years ago I attended the Royal National College in Hereford for those with a visual impairment (I hated the place). Academically mediocre, it did provide good qualifications for those doing secretariat work. With technology those roles have disappeared. Each year's Annual Report gave a list of employment or higher education for those leaving. For those who went into work, the vast majority were employed by the State. Obviously with public spending cuts those options are becoming less available. I have mentioned before that what the Government wants is for those who are young, and physically fit to do 'grunt' work.

@bert Not for long if they take away the low capacity groups, we'll be pushing for work whilst being sick, as an ex JC officer I know employers don't want a sick or disabled member of staff.  Pointless sending sick folks to interviews, smaller businesses can't afford to adapt for those with disabilities.
