Reform UK MP  Lee Anderson let slip his complete contempt for claimants in an unguarded post on X last week.

Anderson was commenting on an incident at the weekend, when a group of people protested noisily outside a restaurant in Newcastle where Nigel Farage was dining.

Patrick Christys, a presenter on GB News posted “You don’t have to be on the side of Nigel Farage to be against these aggressive, far-left, militant thugs.”

In response Anderson posted “The Great Unwashed. I’d wager half of them at least are on PIP.”

As an example of the kind of bigoted prejudice you might overhear in any bar, it’s unremarkable.

But given that Anderson is not only an MP, but has also been Reform UK’s “spokesman on welfare” since September 2025, it is a little surprising that he would be so openly prejudiced against people who claim disability benefits.

Particularly with a byelection coming up in Gorton and Denton on 26 February, where no fewer than 10,036 people are currently in receipt of PIP, according to the DWP’s statxplore

At the last election, just under 37,000 votes were cast in Gorton and Denton, on a turnout of 47.8%, with Labour getting a majority of 13,413 over second place Reform.  Whoever wins this time around, the result is likely to be much closer.

So insulting around 10,000 potential voters isn’t necessarily the brightest idea.

Though it has to be said that the Reform UK candidate in Gorton and Denton, Matt Goodwin, isn’t shy about insulting claimants either.

In March 2025 Goodwin posted on X

“Last night, on BBC Any Questions, to much shock & horror in the studio, I said I simply do not believe that the millions of people who are claiming sickness benefit in this country are genuinely sick.”

There are currently 8,671 UC health claimants in Gorton and Denton.

Between them, Anderson and Goodwin are going out of their way to show their contempt for a large proportion of their potential voters.  Perhaps the voters of Gorton and Denton will return the compliment.

I live in the Denton constituency so I will be voting on February 26th. I can't stand Reform and what they represent 😤 but unfortunately because of the way local Labour has behaved in Denton and Tameside. ( Google Shiver Me Timbers WhatsApp Group) it looks very likely that Reform will win the seat. And God help us all!!! Reform are a populous party of slogans and no substance. I believe they were the party that demised benefit claiming especially those on Pip. It never gets mentioned by any of the party's that Pip is an in work benefit. And Reform have jumped on the bandwagon telling the British Public that Pip claimants have chosen benefits as a life style choice. Leading people to believe that we are making hay while the sun shines and absolutely raking it in. And those people who have been lucky enough never to have had to rely on the benefit system believe them. Now the Tories are copying this way of thinking.  Reform and the Tories will also tell everyone that the welfare bill is soaring. Which isn't true. If you have the time to look and study the figures our levels of welfare are at rock bottom. And as a percentage of GDP it has been constant at 10/12% for the last 10 to 15 years. I didn't think it would be long before members of Reform started to slip up. Saying what they really mean in private and at rallies. And watching to a certain extent what they say to the media or in the public domain. "We support people who set their alarm clocks each morning" Is their battle cry. Which is a dig at people on benefits. They think people who claim Pip are lazy there is nothing wrong with them they are just work shy. You would think wouldn't you that there was a person just handing money out without questioning anything. Which we know is far from the truth. And anyone who has never had to claim anything will believe this. Why wouldn't they if they've never had to deal with the degrading and cruel system of benefits especially disabled Benefits. What makes the whole thing disturbing and disgusting is. if the polls are to be believed. Ot is a future welfare minister saying this

Well as a voter in the Gorton & Denton By-election I won't be voting for Matt Goodwin... but to be fair I never was going to.

This just makes me more determined not to.

      @Louise H
Louise, Relieved to hear this, but it's utterley shocking, that many working class voters still somehow, firmly belive that this bunch of charlatans actually cares about 'them'?  If there is anything that you can do locally to spread this information then I hope that you will - however small it seems, it all helps spread the word.  Trumps project '25 must not be allowed to infliltrate our shores: and Farage et al is all about funding from Russia, but at the same time takes Trumps policies on board.  What a horror show that would be!  Hoping the new year finds you well enough, and to everyone else too. All the Best, Jae.

This comes as little surprise and if these lot get in (which looks likely) the sick and vulnerable will be persecuted to the Nth degree, Reform's mouthpiece Talk TV is always banging on that the benefits bill is high and generous , I'd love to see Jeremy Kyle or Julia Hartley Brewer survive in what we have to
Whoever gets in , Labour,  Tories or Reform they will target the mentally /physically vulnerable that's because we are an easy target

@Duncan Looks like a coalition between either Reform and Tories or labour liberals and greens,it seems no one will have a clear majority.

Anyone - ANYONE at all - who have been in these comment sections over the last few years telling us how good Reform will be, including those on eligible welfare, have nothing of value and nothing valid to say anymore.

Unless they are here pretending to be claimants of PIP/LCW/LCWRA and trying to influence people to vote Reform, they have lost this argument officially.

Even though it was always obvious to 99.9% of us that Reform would literally cleanse this country of 'undesirables' (including the disabled) if they came to power with a big majority (they wont, btw), to that 0.1%, Lee Anderson's comment is the nail in the coffin for somehow even attempting to think Reform was going to protect us.

I'm 32, so I have plenty of time to wait for the day with glee when people who even thought about voting for Reform UK will be ridiculed and mocked relentlessly, forever recorded in history as the moment where so many people were exposed as too thick to understand basic politics and psychological messaging.

@Chris H Thanks, Chris H, for your well considered comments.  I believe 'tough love' needs to go hand in hand with genuine careing: but sadly, this has been lost from many a public forum or, within the reality of our daily lives.  I'm personally choking on the saccarine, faux concerns of adults who should take personal responsibility for their own situations.  And I'm speaking as a retiree with a disability and daily, ongoing challenges.   Come on folk!

@Chris H Meanwhile if Reform do get in how many people will be driven to suicide by their actions. So don't act like it's all sh*ts and giggles please. This is people's lives on the line.

@Chris H You have a long time until retirement if your only 32,most of us on here are in our 50s and 60s so will have minimal effect.

@Chris H Reform might receive a slightly higher percentage of the vote than the other parties but they are unlikely too get a majority and would likely have to team up with the Tories.

If this vile party ever gets in to power (unrealistic...they're a one man band and Nige's a full time grifter who always runs away at the last minute), there need to be Poll Tax style protests against them across the country.  I believe most British people are fair minded.

As vile as expected, but the Tories hold pretty much identical views, and Labour aren't much better, though they do at least have backbenchers who don't go along with this kind of thing. The Labour leadership on the other hand......

Such a horrible attitude from this man and party against disabled people. Any one of us can become disabled at any point it’s only luck of the draw. It worried me that he is trying to label disabled and vulnerable people as “other” which is a very dangerous and slippery slope.

@Anniesmum @Anniesmum the same applies to the job centre staff they should think next time they start looking down belittling and threatening claimants because one of their friends or family might have cancer depression autism or end up with some bad disease where they can’t work in the future and have to be on the other side of the computer

I mean Lee Anderson has always been derogatory and contemptible towards benefit claimants
    This isn’t new
The militant far left thugs comment from GB news was more shocking to be honest
No it’s not a good idea to alienate voters before an election
Reform hate disabled people, we know that.
The troll rhetoric against any protesters have always been “they must be on benefits”, or a  “scrounger”

I am pretty sure Benefits and Work website reported on Reforms Disability plans presented by Lee Anderson in which he derided and laughed at people being on disability.

And it is not just Reform that have a derogatory opinion of people on disability benefits it is the Conservatives and Labour and LibDems too. Who have repeatedly made their view that lots of those on benefits are malingerers and fraudsters taking the piss, or people of weak moral character who need to pull themselves together, man up and take some personal responsibility. All the main political parties have engaged in scapegoating and demonizing those on disability benefits. As have the media. And if social media and rising disability hate crime is anything to go by the general public.

How on earth these people on GB “News” can call themselves journalists is beyond me.

“Patrick Christys, a presenter on GB News posted “You don’t have to be on the side of Nigel Farage to be against these aggressive, far-left, militant thugs.”

You are on the side of Farage. GB “News” is a front for Reform UK.

The channel’s editorial stance is almost perfectly synchronized with Reform UK’s core messaging:

Anti-EU/Pro-Brexit: A foundational principle for both.

Anti-“Woke"/Culture War: This is the daily fodder for many GB News segments, mirroring Reform's focus on battling "wokeness" and "identity politics."

Skepticism of Climate Policies: Both are highly critical of Net Zero targets and green policies, framing them as costly and impractical.

Distrust of Mainstream Institutions: Both position themselves as outsiders fighting a "liberal elite" in politics, media, civil service, and judiciary.

And lets not forget peddling junk science such as paracetamol causing autism or anything else that their American paymasters tell them.

It’s a shame following Brexit that we can’t just move somewhere else in Europe having largely lost those rights. If this shower were to ever see the inside of Downing Street this country will be screwed.

The feeling is mutual. A *****y little man in a grubby, grasping party. Let’s hope the electorate show them contempt come election time, and they end up where they belong in the political dustbin.

@Mad Si The chance of a Tory/Reform coalition government in 2029 is limited now.
Nige backpedaling on tax cuts and efficiency savings, more and more of their candidates being overtly anti-disabled in public forums, and Kent County Council being the obvious scenario of Reform and reality not mixing...
We will see what happens, but voting for change is just as valid with the green party...
